Piramal Pharma Solutions Invests in Sustainable Solar Energy at UK Facility

Piramal Pharma Solutions Boosts Sustainability with Solar Plant

Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), a prominent global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), is embarking on a transformative journey towards sustainability with the construction of a new solar power plant at its facility in Morpeth, UK. This project marks a significant milestone in their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of their strategic objectives for the coming years.

The Solar Power Initiative

The newly designed ground-mounted solar power plant is set to have a capacity of 4.3 MWp, harnessing renewable energy directly for the Morpeth site. With an estimated annual output of around 3,950 MWh, the solar installation will cater to approximately 22% of the facility’s electricity needs when it becomes operational.

Spread over 16 acres and featuring around 6,200 solar panels, this initiative is anticipated to produce sufficient clean energy to power roughly 1,460 homes in the UK every year. The deployment is being managed under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Alight UK BTM1 Limited, a recognized leader in solar development and generation.

A Sustainable Step Forward

This project is not just about harnessing solar energy; it also plays a pivotal role in PPS’s overarching sustainability goals. By implementing this solar plant, Piramal Pharma expects to avoid an estimated 20,000 tCO₂e emissions over the next 25 years. This reduction aligns with their target to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by fiscal year 2030.

Frank Bugg, Senior Vice President for UK and European Operations at PPS, remarked, "At Piramal Pharma Solutions, we strive to embed sustainability into every facet of our global operations. Partnering with Alight on this project demonstrates our pledge towards a future powered by renewable energy, benefitting our customers and shareholders globally."

The Broader Impact

As businesses across the UK seek practical ways to reduce emissions and enhance energy resilience, this project exemplifies how onsite solar power can effectively address such challenges. Rob Stait, Managing Director at Alight, stated, "The collaboration with Piramal Pharma showcases the multiple benefits that onsite solar can provide—reducing emissions, strengthening energy resilience, and managing long-term costs."

Operational activities related to the solar power plant are scheduled to kick off in the first quarter of 2027, further solidifying Piramal's position as a forward-thinking entity within the pharmaceutical industry, committed to sustainable practices.
