Miraiya Bookstore Itabashi to Reopen with New Children's Section
Itabashi's Miraiya Bookstore, part of the Aeon Group, is set for a grand reopening on November 1, 2025. Located on the fourth floor of the Aeon Itabashi Shopping Center, this revamped location aims to transform the traditional bookstore experience into an engaging reading space for children. The highlight of the opening ceremony will be the presence of Taro Miura, a distinguished picture book author and current guest professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design, who has collaborated on the design of the children’s book section, 'Miraiya no Mori' (Forest of Miraiya).
Grand Reopening Ceremony Details
The reopening festivities will commence at 10:30 AM, featuring greetings from Taro Miura, a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, and commemorative photographs. This event is open to the public, particularly aimed at families and children, encouraging community participation in celebrating the arrival of this new creative space.
About Taro Miura
Taro Miura, born in 1968 in Aichi Prefecture, is an acclaimed picture book artist and author. He graduated from the Osaka University of Arts and has gained international recognition through numerous selections at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. His book 'Kuttuita' (Stuck Together) has sold over 1.3 million copies in Japan, while 'Chiisana Ousama' (The Little Prince) won the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award for Art. As a guest professor at Joshibi University, he continues to inspire young artists and students.
A Collaborative Design Process
The renovation of the bookstore's children’s section involved students from Joshibi University, guided by the direction of Yuko Sugiyama, a part-time lecturer and designer at the university. This collaboration aims to create a more engaging and interactive reading experience for children. The result is an inviting environment that not only sells books but encourages children's curiosity and love for reading.
Community Focus
With this revamp, the Itabashi store is set to evolve from a simple retail space into an experiential reading environment. The project aims to captivate young minds—sparking their interest in picking up books independently. This initiative also provides a cozy and welcoming atmosphere for parents and the local community, essentially creating a 'bookstore forest' where children can explore their imaginations freely.
