A Historic Month for Organ Donation in South Florida

The South Florida Donor Network (SFDN) reported a groundbreaking achievement in June 2026, celebrating the highest monthly totals for organ donations and transplants in the history of the region. This significant milestone is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the organization, which aims to save lives through organ donation.

In total, SFDN facilitated the transplantation of 79 organs from 24 heroic donors, surpassing the previous records of 77 organs transplanted and 23 organ donors in a single month. This remarkable feat comes just three months after the organization took over operations for organ procurement in the area, indicating an early and profound impact.

According to Joe Ferreira, the president and CEO of SFDN, "Every donor represents a heroic act of generosity, every transplant represents another person given a second chance at life, and every family who says ‘yes’ leaves a legacy that extends far beyond a single moment." He expressed gratitude towards the hospital partners, donor families, and the dedicated SFDN team, acknowledging their roles in achieving this historic success.

The milestone is particularly significant as it reflects collective efforts among clinical teams, hospital staff, and donation specialists who have been working tirelessly to honor donor wishes and maximize every opportunity to facilitate organ donation.

Tyre Gray, SFDN's chief administrative and legal officer and also a kidney transplant recipient, added, “This achievement is especially meaningful because it reflects what is possible when an entire community comes together around a shared mission.” He emphasized that SFDN's commitment to honoring every donor and compassionately supporting their families has been clear since the beginning.

Currently, there are more than 109,000 individuals nationwide waiting for life-saving organ transplants, with around 6,300 in Florida alone. Notably, one organ donor can potentially save up to eight lives, along with enhancing many more lives through tissue donation.
