BayPort Credit Union's Generous Donation to Newport News Schools Enhances Community Programs

A Commitment to the Community

BayPort Credit Union has once again demonstrated its commitment to education by donating $25,000 and 100 pounds of school supplies to Newport News Public Schools. This generous contribution is directed towards the Office of Youth Development, Family and Community Engagement (FACE) for the 2026–2027 academic year. The underlying goal is to support various initiatives aimed at empowering students and strengthening families within the Newport News community.

Financed through this sponsorship, programs geared toward enhancing overall well-being will specifically focus on student empowerment and family engagement. As part of an event held on August 19, BayPort’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Jennifer Coyne, alongside Chief Member Experience Officer, Ira Williams, presented the funding to Dr. Kipp Rogers, Chief Academic Officer of Newport News Public Schools. The presentation took place at Harbor Park, coinciding with a special School Supply Drive Night.

During this event, the BayPort Foundation collaborated with the Norfolk Tides, gathering essential school supplies from fans, accumulating a total of 100 pounds. This initiative underscores BayPort's ongoing efforts to assist students and families facing educational challenges.

BayPort's commitment to FACE not only ensures financial support but also includes continued involvement in family empowerment sessions, quarterly programs that address pivotal family-oriented issues. Now in its third iteration, this series will equip parents and caregivers with valuable financial education, further enhancing their ability to foster a stable home environment.

Additionally, the credit union plans to fund two youth empowerment conferences throughout the academic year, focusing on leadership and goal-setting. By targeting initiatives like these, BayPort seeks to promote a positive culture both in schools and the wider community.

"BayPort is proud to continue our partnership with Newport News Public Schools and invest in programs that empower students and families," expressed Jim Mears, President and CEO of BayPort. His remarks reflect the organization's longstanding commitment to community service that spans nearly a century.

Dr. Kipp Rogers also voiced appreciation for the collaboration, stating, "Their investment helps us to create meaningful opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom, empowering students, engaging families, and strengthening our community."

BayPort Credit Union, founded in 1928 by some shipyard workers from Newport News Shipbuilding, was established on the principle that everyone deserves access to reliable financial services. Today, with assets exceeding $2.7 billion and over 156,000 members, BayPort remains dedicated to serving its community and extending membership across Virginia and beyond.

Through support aimed at connecting families to necessary resources, BayPort actively contributes to the success of Newport News students, both academically and in their personal development. As institutions evolve and adapt to challenges, partnerships like those between BayPort and Newport News Public Schools serve as vital lifelines, fostering a collaborative spirit dedicated to future generations.

Looking Ahead

This partnership not only illustrates a model of successful community involvement but emphasizes the significance of financial institutions playing an active role in educational support. With BayPort’s proactive approach, the Newport News community awaits a prosperous and empowered future.
