In a significant showcase at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2026, SiBionics introduced a transformative concept titled "See More, Act Earlier," which interlinks continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with advanced diabetes care solutions. This innovative approach was presented as part of a detailed exhibition featuring three themes: "See More, Not Just Glucose," highlighting the assessment of glucose and ketone bodies; "Act Earlier: From Knowledge to Intervention," focusing on the integration of multimodal monitoring and insulin delivery; and "Go Further: Realizing the Unimaginable," aimed at exploring broader applications for biosensors.
The vision was elaborated upon during a specialized symposium hosted by SiBionics, titled "From Sensors to Integrated Care: New Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Management." Esteemed speakers included Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology GmbH (IfDT) in Germany.
Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza discussed the significance of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) targeted at individualized care for type 3c diabetes. Furthermore, Professor Wei Qiang presented pivotal findings on the accuracy of CGM systems along with promising concepts for future multimodal monitoring strategies. Another highlight was Professor Andrej Janež's address on the role of ketone body monitoring in the context of GLP-1 treatments, complemented by insights from Professor Ahmad Haidar on the interplay between glucose and ketone monitoring, based on initial results from the feasibility study SMART02.
SMART02 focused on evaluating an early prototype called niia signature, developed collaboratively by PharmaSens and SiBionics since their partnership was announced in June 2025. This innovative device aims to merge continuous glucose monitoring, insulin delivery, and automatic glucose control (AGC) algorithms into a single wearable patch. By streamlining these functionalities, the initiative seeks to lighten the burden of managing separate devices used in automated insulin delivery systems (AID).
The study tackled one of the main challenges of blending these functionalities - maintaining the quality of glucose measurements under conditions where insulin administration occurs near the sensor. Notably, transitional disruptions following bolus injections were found to be relatively infrequent, primarily occurring with doses of 10 units or more, which presented a 20-25% probability. The average normalization period for the sensor readings was around 20 minutes post-bolus injection. During a secondary phase of the study, the prototype was tested alongside an AGC algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar, showing stable performance throughout.
The results, also highlighted at the SiBionics exhibition booth, mark a crucial early step in development efforts. The joint exhibition and symposium effectively bridged clinical needs with technological advancements. Through the niia signature project, PharmaSens and SiBionics explore how integration can enhance the wearability and usability of future AID systems, with further research critical to defining its operational parameters and clinical potential.
It is essential to note that niia signature is an investigational product that has not yet received any market approvals and is currently unavailable for purchase.
