Co-Diagnostics' Joint Venture CoSara Announces Groundbreaking HPV Study Results Shaping Future Cancer Screening Approaches
Breakthrough HPV Screening Study by CoSara Diagnostics
Co-Diagnostics, Inc., a prominent player in the field of molecular diagnostics, has made a significant stride in cervical cancer screening through its joint venture, CoSara Diagnostics. Recently, the company announced the publication of a peer-reviewed study showcasing the effectiveness of the SARAGENE® Human Papillomavirus High Risk (HPV-HR) Test, manufactured by CoSara. The study was published in the journal Infectious Agents and Cancer, underscoring the potential for molecular HPV testing to identify at-risk women.
Conducted in Gujarat, India, this pivotal research involved screening 625 women aged between 30 and 60 years. Right from hospital settings to community screenings, the data collected has showcased alarming statistics. Out of the 20 HPV-positive women, 18 presented with negative cytology results, indicating a significant under-detection issue. Following colposcopy and directed biopsies, high-grade cervical lesions were detected in nearly half of the HPV-positive participants, including three cases of invasive cervical carcinoma. Such findings highlight the inadequacies of traditional cytology methods alone in identifying high-risk cases.
CEO Dwight Egan emphasized the importance of broadening access to molecular HPV testing, noting that it could dramatically improve cervical cancer screening efficacy in regions where diagnostics are difficult to obtain. By ensuring that CoSara's SARAGENE® Test finds its way into clinical use, the company aims to elevate diagnostic standards across India and the South Asian region.
The SARAGENE® HPV-HR Test operates as a laboratory-based multiplex real-time PCR assay, designed to detect multiple high-risk HPV genotypes, including HPV-16 and HPV-18. Despite being authorized in India, it is currently not available for sale in the U.S., making its application highly localized at present. Researchers have recognized the preliminary nature of these findings and have urged the need for larger-scale studies to confirm and validate the implications of their research.
The timing of this publication aligns with broader international efforts geared towards enhancing HPV screening access. Recently, the World Health Organization has been proactive in encouraging nations to implement HPV DNA-based screening programs. CoSara's strategic manufacturing presence in India is viewed as a foundational asset that can support these global initiatives.
In a promising expansion move, Co-Dx has plans to leverage CoSara’s distribution capabilities beyond India into territories including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, subject to necessary regulatory approvals. As the company continues to build its distributor network, boasting over 40 partners in India alone, it remains focused on ensuring that its innovative HPV screening solutions are accessible.
CoSara will also be highlighted at MICROCON 2026, an important congress for microbiologists and clinical researchers that runs from October 28 to November 1, 2026, at AIIMS Nagpur, Maharashtra. This event serves as an excellent platform for showcasing their molecular diagnostics portfolio and engaging with stakeholders from across the industry.
Future initiatives also include a scheduled webinar by Co-Dx on November 17, in observance of World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day. This educational event aims to raise awareness about HPV and the critical essence of screening mechanisms, targeting healthcare professionals and associated audiences across South Asia.
In summary, the research spearheaded by CoSara Diagnostics marks a turning point in the journey toward more accurate cervical cancer prevention strategies. The SARAGENE® Test is positioned as a vital tool that can redefine screening approaches, but it is also a reminder of the critical need for continuous innovations and studies in the field of molecular diagnostics.
