Desange Kuenihira: Inspiring Refugee Entrepreneur Honored on World Refugee Day

Desange Kuenihira: A Beacon of Hope for Refugees

In celebration of World Refugee Day on June 20, USA for UNHCR has chosen Desange Kuenihira, a remarkable former refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as the organization’s featured storyteller for this year. Her inspiring journey from a refugee camp in Uganda to establishing her life in Salt Lake City, Utah, serves as a testament to resilience and determination.

Desange's story is one of courage. Having been forced to escape the violence in her homeland as a child, she initially found refuge in a UNHCR-supported camp in Uganda. This challenging environment didn't suppress her spirit; rather, it fortified it, eventually leading her to resettle in the United States nearly a decade later.

“Every challenge I've faced has been an opportunity for growth and connection,” shares Desange, reflecting on her experiences. Her belief that personal stories have the power to inspire others drives her to share her journey. Today, she is not only a proud graduate of the University of Utah, but also an accomplished author of the book Undefeated Woman, which chronicles her experiences from the refugee camp to her new life in America.

In 2020, Desange founded a non-profit organization called unDEfeated, which aims to empower girls and women in Uganda who face extreme economic hardships. Through this initiative, she provides crucial educational and entrepreneurial opportunities, paving the way for a brighter future for many in need.

“It’s a brave act of love,” remarks Suzanne Ehlers, Executive Director and CEO of USA for UNHCR, speaking on Desange’s commitment to uplifting refugee women in Uganda, especially in a time when funding for humanitarian efforts has drastically declined. Thanks to the work of individuals like Desange, many more refugees can receive the essential aid they need to survive and rebuild their lives.

Upon her arrival in Salt Lake City, Desange surrounded herself with mentors who provided support in her new environment. “In a new country, far from home, the kindness of strangers became my lifeline,” she recalls. Her experiences have taught her that regardless of where we come from, every individual shares a common humanity. It is through compassion and connection that we can truly thrive, she emphasizes.

As part of USA for UNHCR’s initiative, Desange's story will help shed light on the struggles and aspirations of refugees worldwide. To gain deeper insights into her journey, you can view a short film about her life and her impactful work by visiting unrefugees.org.
