MOL and Seaspan Energy Sign Annual LNG Fuel Supply Contract

In a significant development for maritime logistics, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Seaspan Energy Ltd. have successfully entered into an annual LNG (liquefied natural gas) fuel supply contract meant specifically for car carriers at the Port of Vancouver. This contract marks the first of its kind in North America and highlights a committed shift towards more sustainable fuel options in maritime transport.

The inaugural supply of LNG, which took place on April 29, aligns with MOL's ongoing efforts to enhance eco-friendly operations. Following their initial purchase of LNG fuel on March 1, 2025, MOL has successfully conducted several LNG procurement activities in the region. With North America presenting itself as a vital route for car carriers, the need for a stable and reliable supply of LNG has grown increasingly critical. This recent arrangement not only indicates MOL's dedication to continuous fuel acquisition in the area but also reinforces the company's commitment to a greener supply chain.

As part of its environmental vision, MOL has identified the integration of alternative fuels as a crucial step towards achieving net-zero emissions. LNG is being seen as a feasible and economically sensible option for facilitating lower carbon emissions in the short to medium term, with initiatives underway to expand operational regions for LNG fuel vessels.

Harly Penner, the President of Seaspan Energy, expressed the significance of the partnership, stating, “The relationship between Seaspan Energy and MOL is crucial for us. MOL was the first car carrier to be bunkered with LNG at the Port of Vancouver. We are honored to support MOL's operations at this port through this annual supply contract. This partnership reflects both companies' shared commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport and supporting the industry's transition towards net-zero emissions.”

MOL’s Fuel GX Division Head, Mr. Fujihashi, shared his enthusiasm for the contract, indicating that deepening collaboration with Seaspan Energy is a source of pride. He noted, “We are thrilled to formalize this LNG fuel supply contract with Seaspan Energy. We continue to pursue partnerships around clean fuels like Bio-LNG, ensuring we provide our customers with sustainable supply chain options.”
