CATL Launches a $6 Billion Battery Integration Project in Indonesia

On July 1, 2025, a significant advancement was made in the field of sustainable energy as Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guangdong Brunp Recycling Technology Co., Ltd, celebrated the groundbreaking of its Indonesia Battery Integration Project in collaboration with PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) and the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). This ambitious initiative, located in the Karawang New Industry City in West Java Province, represents a total investment of nearly USD 6 billion, setting the stage for unprecedented developments in the battery industry.

Comprehensive Battery Value Chain

The expansive project, spanning over 2,000 hectares, is designed to encompass every aspect of the battery value chain. This includes the mining and processing of nickel, the production of battery materials, the manufacturing of batteries, and the recycling of spent batteries. A significant aspect of this project will be realized at the FHT Industrial Park in East Halmahera, North Maluku Province, where state-of-the-art technology will be employed to achieve ultra-low energy consumption and high recovery rates for battery materials.

In the first phase, the battery manufacturing plant in Karawang will have an annual capacity of 6.9 GWh, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and quality in battery production. Utilizing CATL's Lighthouse Factory and Extreme Manufacturing strategies, the facility is poised to support Indonesia's ambitious goals for energy transition and electric mobility both domestically and globally.

Establishing a Circular Economy

A standout feature of the Indonesia Battery Integration Project is the introduction of the country's first renewable energy circular system. The project is focused on creating an ecosystem that not only supports battery production but also emphasizes sustainability, with over 95% metal recovery rates from recycled batteries. Upon reaching full operational status, it is projected to yield 142,000 tons of nickel and 30,000 tons of cathode materials annually, with a capacity to recycle approximately 20,000 tons of batteries.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, present at the groundbreaking ceremony, highlighted the project as a landmark initiative, showcasing the nation’s commitment to fostering sustainable practices while partnering with leading global stakeholders in the quest for a greener future.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Indonesia Battery Integration Project is not only a step towards achieving renewable energy targets but also a significant contributor to the local economy. It is expected to generate around 8,000 direct jobs and create an additional 35,000 indirect job opportunities, providing a substantial boost to the local labor market upon reaching its full operational capacity. This aligns with Indonesia's overarching goal of carbon neutrality by 2060, reaffirming the nation's dedication to sustainable industrial practices.

As CATL strengthens its global presence through this project, it facilitates a more resilient supply of raw materials and furthers the global battery circular economy. By integrating the full spectrum of the battery value chain, this initiative sets an exemplary standard of collaboration in the international industry.

In conclusion, the groundbreaking of the Indonesia Battery Integration Project marks a pivotal moment, not only for CATL and its partners but for Indonesia’s sustainable energy ambitions. This project is poised to transform the landscape of battery manufacturing and recycling in Southeast Asia, creating a blueprint for future endeavors in the green energy sector.
