Final Public Consultation on Consolidated Mining Standards Set for October 2025

CMSI to Host Final Public Consultation

The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI), a collaboration involving The Copper Mark, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), and the World Gold Council (WGC), is gearing up for a significant event. From October 8 to November 17, 2025, the CMSI will conduct its final public consultation concerning the consolidated mining standard, assurance process, and policy on allegations.

Purpose of the Consultation

This initiative aims to blend several existing standards into a single, comprehensive framework that simplifies compliance for companies in the mining sector. By doing so, it intends to facilitate greater adoption by businesses looking for a credible global benchmark. During this period, stakeholders and rights holders involved in the mining industry, as well as individuals affected by mining activities, will have the opportunity to review documents and provide their input.

The CMSI partners will engage in various outreach activities throughout the consultation. This includes a series of virtual public webinars tailored to different time zones, providing direct information sessions for a wide range of stakeholders. Participants will include civil society organizations, government representatives, and policymakers, alongside targeted engagements with indigenous peoples and organizations.

Stakeholder Engagement

Through this extensive dialogue and consultation process, the initiative encourages stakeholders worldwide to collaborate in developing a standard that promotes positive outcomes for people and the environment throughout the value chains of various metals. The invitation to provide feedback aims to shape the future of mining practices, ensuring they align with current sustainability goals.

Stakeholders will be able to access the consultation portal and submit their comments online. The CMSI's guidelines adhere to good practice codes established by ISEAL, ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and legitimacy in the consultation process.

The public consultation portal is hosted independently on the CMSI’s website, allowing for a streamlined way for participants to submit their opinions on the consolidated standards, assurance processes, and policies regarding allegations. The consolidated standard and related documents will be available in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese.

Reflection on Previous Consultation

This final public consultation follows the initial round held from October 16 to December 16, 2024, which garnered a substantial response with detailed comments from 192 stakeholders across 25 countries, amounting to nearly 4,700 individual comments. Feedback from these submissions will inform the revisions to the consolidated standard.

The governance model for the Copper Mark is also undergoing evolution, with plans to appoint an independent president and board members responsible for the approval of the final consolidated standard, assurance process, and policy on allegations. The launch of the finalized standards is expected in the first half of 2026.
