A New Dawn in Wellness for Black Children
In a world where wellness practices often overlook minority communities, an Atlanta couple has launched a revolutionary app called
Bright Crowns. This unique daily wellness tool, specifically designed for Black children, is aimed at weaving a robust fabric of identity, confidence, and resilience into the lives of its young users. The app is now available on the Apple App Store, offering a five-minute morning routine that combines culturally resonant affirmations, inspiring stories, and mindful practices.
The inception of Bright Crowns arose from the personal experiences of its founders, David and Tia Harley. As parents of two young children, the couple realized that existing wellness resources were largely generic, often lacking the representation their children needed. They searched within the booming $2.1 trillion wellness industry but found nothing that resonated with their cultural heritage—the voices and visuals presented in most apps felt foreign.
Transforming Children's Mornings
Bright Crowns' primary objective is to fortify Black children with a sense of belonging and self-worth before they step into their day. Its
five-minute routine integrates
breathwork, culturally-grounded affirmations, and narratives celebrating notable Black figures, ensuring kids start their day steered towards greatness. The companies believe that the journey begins with the child recognizing their intrinsic value and building a strong sense of identity, echoed in the progression from
Breathe. Belong. Become.
Once the morning routine concludes, Bright Crowns doesn't just fade away. Instead, it accompanies children throughout the day and night. Whether it's boosting confidence before an exam, helping settle big feelings, or winding down with sleep stories inspired by the African diaspora, the practice ensures that the wellness journey continues.
Empowering Through Storytelling
As part of its unique offering, the app introduces a point of differentiation by enabling children to earn crowns rooted in
real African kingdoms—a symbolic inheritance rather than a mere reward. The focus is not solely on momentary relief but rather on equipping children with enduring tools that promote emotional steadiness, identity affirmation, and resilience, instilling a belief in their capacity to shape their futures.
Research-Backed Approach
Bright Crowns is not just a product of inspiration; it is grounded in
extensive research. A landmark study published in
Science highlighted that culturally specific practices could effectively reduce the racial achievement gap among Black students, signaling a critical shift in how educational and emotional support systems can be structured. Findings from the
Annual Review of Clinical Psychology further emphasize ethnic-racial identity as a key protective factor for Black youth's mental health.
Co-founder Tia Harley articulates the ethos of Bright Crowns succinctly:
“We can't always lighten the load our children carry, but we can help make them strong enough to carry it, with their heads held high.” Her husband, David, emphasizes the app’s mission, stating,
“We don’t teach them to survive. We teach them they were born to thrive.”

Parents can now access Bright Crowns through the Apple App Store with a
seven-day free trial. Families who subscribe by January 31, 2027, can secure the
