The 15th National Games of China: A Grand Opening in Guangzhou
Celebrating Unity and Athletes: China’s 15th National Games
On the evening of November 9, 2025, the 15th National Games of China officially kicked off in a dazzling ceremony at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center in Guangzhou, marking a significant event in the country's sporting calendar. With a rich history and a focus on unity, this year's games are notable for being the first jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, symbolizing the spirit of collaboration among these regions.
The opening event was graced by President Xi Jinping, who made a ceremonial declaration that set the Games in motion. The vibrant ceremony highlighted the participation of 37 delegations representing not only the various provinces and regions of China but also the autonomous territories of Hong Kong and Macao, as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and several industrial sports associations. Speeches by various officials, including Huang Kunming and the chief executives of Hong Kong and Macao, set a tone of celebration and camaraderie.
A key highlight of the evening was the performance titled ‘Dreaming of the Future,’ which captivated the audience with a rich narrative split into three chapters: ‘Shared Roots, Shared Origin,’ ‘Shared Hearts, Shared Bonds,’ and ‘Shared Dreams, Shared Fulfillment.’ This artistic showcase creatively intertwined elements of culture, sport, and advanced technology, effectively embodying the theme of the Games—‘Passionate National Games, Vibrant Greater Bay Area.’
In this culturally rich presentation, elements significant to Lingnan culture, including Cantonese opera, pop music, and traditional dances, were prominently featured. These performances not only showcased the artistic talents of the region but also highlighted its local identity, cultural heritage, and the overall grandeur of China's aspirations in the global arena.
As the opening night progressed, the atmosphere became electrifying with the torch relay and the subsequent cauldron lighting ceremony. The relay began on November 2 and spanned the three hosting regions, culminating at the sports center amidst great anticipation. The relay was carried out by 12 distinguished athletes who bore the torch, culminating in the final three representatives—Su Bingtian, Cheung Ka Long, and Li Yi—who together ignited the Games' cauldron, illuminating the event with a powerful symbol of unity and achievement.
The night came to a close with the stirring theme song ‘Hearts as One,’ which encapsulated the spirit of unity and sportsmanship celebrated during the Games. The event was attended by prominent guests, including Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee, who adds a touch of international recognition to this national spectacle.
The 15th National Games will run until November 21, featuring more than 14,000 athletes across various sports disciplines. Additionally, roughly 11,000 participants will engage in extensive mass-participation events designed to foster community spirit and encourage active lifestyles among the citizens of China.
In summary, the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games stands as a testament to the unity and collaborative spirit exemplified by the regions of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. As athletes strive for excellence, the event promises to be a vibrant celebration of sport, culture, and community, reinforcing the message that through sports, bonds are strengthened, and dreams are shared.
