Introducing the PUDU D5 Series: Advanced Autonomous Quadrupeds for Complex Operations

Introduction to the PUDU D5 Series

Pudu Robotics, a global leader in service robotics, recently announced the launch of the PUDU D5 series, marking a significant step toward advanced automation in complex environments. This new line features two distinct configurations: the PUDU D5 and the PUDU D5-W. The former is specifically designed for adaptability in varied terrains, while the latter is optimized for performance on mixed surfaces.

Addressing the Automation Gap in Complex Environments

While service robots have gained traction in structured environments like restaurants and hotels, many outdoor and industrial settings remain challenging for automation. Factors such as rugged landscapes, inclines, stairs, and weather exposure continue to hinder the deployment of robots in critical tasks including inspection, surveillance, logistical support, and emergency response. The D5 series aims to bridge these gaps by providing advanced autonomy, robust mobility, accurate perception, and environmental resilience, enabling operations in places where traditional systems falter.

Felix Zhang, founder and CEO of Pudu Robotics, stated, “The PUDU D5 series signifies a significant advance in our vision for robotics. It offers advanced autonomy, robust mobility, and intelligent interaction for complex scenarios in outdoor and industrial environments.” He emphasized that the D5 is not merely a new product, but a crucial milestone in their mission to extend robot applications across various sectors.

Key Features of the PUDU D5 Series

1. Automotive-Grade Computing for True Autonomy
The D5 is equipped with a dual-processor architecture using NVIDIA Orin and RK3588, achieving up to 275 TOPS. This allows for simultaneous mapping and localization, 3D reconstruction, object recognition, obstacle avoidance, and trajectory planning in real-time, enabling continuous and unsupervised operations even in dynamic environments.

2. High-Precision 360° Perception
Four 120° fisheye cameras combined with two 192-line LiDAR sensors provide comprehensive environmental awareness. This setup generates dense 3D point clouds for precise localization and dynamic navigation, with remote visualization tools for operator oversight as needed.

3. Navigation Capabilities Over Vast Areas
The D5 can map and navigate installations spanning up to a million square meters, managing complete autonomous workflows including departure, monitoring, obstacle handling, and returning to charge. With a range of 14 kilometers, it is suitable for venues like airports, metro systems, and industrial campuses.

4. Stable Payload Capacity
Constructed from high-strength aluminum and featuring a closed-loop torque correction system, the D5 can maintain stable payloads of 30 kg for over two hours in continuous operation. This allows it to carry various inspection devices, materials, and mission-specific modules.

5. All-Terrain Mobility for Complex Environments
Its advanced hybrid wheel-leg locomotion allows for speeds of 5 m/s on flat surfaces while being capable of ascending grades of 30° and seamlessly navigating stairs of 25 cm. IMU-driven stabilization and bionic control algorithms ensure smooth operation on rugged terrain.

6. Durability Under Extreme Conditions
Designed to withstand real-world exposure, the D5 can start in temperatures as low as -10°C and operate between -20°C and 55°C. With IP67 protection, it remains reliable under rain, snow, dust, and fluctuating weather conditions.

7. Intelligent Tracking and Predictive Avoidance
By fusing vision and depth detection with proprietary dynamic obstacle prediction algorithms, the D5 ensures natural and reliable autonomous tracking. It maintains safe distances even in narrow or cluttered environments, making it ideal for inspection, logistics, and escort tasks.

8. Natural Interaction through Gesture and Voice Control
The D5 supports over 10 intuitive gestures (like start, stop, recall, follow, etc.) and is equipped with a network of six microphones with AI noise reduction for robust voice recognition in noisy settings, facilitating smoother collaboration and onsite operations.

Expanding Pudu's Ecosystem of Embodied Intelligence

The PUDU D5 series broadens Pudu Robotics' portfolio of embodied intelligence beyond specialized service robots, catering to industrial and complex outdoor settings. By complementing existing specialized, semi-humanoid, and humanoid robots, the D5 empowers clients to deploy robot fleets for various scenarios—from industrial inspections and transport infrastructure to outdoor security and research applications. This creates a scalable ecosystem that addresses real-world operational challenges that were previously beyond the reach of autonomous systems.
