Olin Corporation Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Ammunition Facility at Lake City

In a historic event that signifies a leap in military ammunition capabilities, Olin Corporation's Winchester division, in collaboration with the U.S. Army's Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments and Ammunition, marked the groundbreaking ceremony of a cutting-edge 6.8mm ammunition facility at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) on February 5, 2025. This state-of-the-art facility emerges as a cornerstone of the Army's Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) Program, illustrating the Army's commitment to modernizing its capabilities.

During the ceremony, Olin's President and CEO, Ken Lane, reflected on the legacy of Olin Winchester in ammunition manufacturing and its unwavering support for the U.S. military. Lane stated, "We take pride in our partnership with the U.S. Army to establish this transformative facility, which will introduce new capabilities for our Warfighters." His sentiments echoed throughout the event, attended by over 100 dignitaries, including military officials and local community representatives.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured speeches from prominent figures including Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, who emphasized the strategic importance of the new facility. "This facility will represent a significant step forward in equipping our Soldiers with the advanced munitions they need to maintain overmatch on the battlefield," asserted Reim. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm in the Kansas City region, with 90% of the work expected to support local industries and almost 50 local businesses participating in the construction efforts.

Historically, Lake City has played a vital role in the U.S. military's ammunition production since 1941, and this new facility is set to build upon that proud heritage. The proposed advanced ammunition production facility will encompass 450,000 square feet and will be equipped to manufacture every component of the 6.8mm ammunition, along with finished rounds for the military. This capability reinforces LCAAP's critical function in supporting national defense initiatives.

Olin Corporation, noted for its vertically integrated business model, excels in both chemical and ammunition manufacturing. Winchester, as part of Olin, produces a wide range of products including sporting and law enforcement ammunition, as well as military components. The groundbreaking of the new facility is a testament to Olin's commitment to enhancing the defense industrial base, creating high-quality jobs, and stimulating economic growth in the surrounding community.

As the LCAAP facility gears up for its groundbreaking phase, it underscores the collaborative efforts between industry leaders and the military to adapt to ever-evolving defense needs. With a focus on producing advanced munitions, this initiative not only bolsters the military's capability but also reaffirms the importance of local economies in the broader context of national security.

As we look ahead, the facility signifies a commitment to innovation and a robust defense capability, ensuring that American troops are equipped with the tools they need to achieve mission success. With the momentum gathered from this historic ceremony, Olin Corporation stands poised to deliver on its promise to the military and the nation.

As this project unfolds, it highlights the vital intersection of technological advancement, military readiness, and community development, laying the groundwork for a more secure future.
