Engineering Talent Crisis: A Growing Concern



Recent findings from Storyblok expose a concerning trend in enterprise technology: 1 in 4 organizations are not confident in their ability to attract and retain the engineering talent essential for maintaining their systems. This is particularly alarming for those reliant on legacy systems, which could lead to a host of operational challenges, including unmaintainable systems and unmanageable security debt.

A survey, titled the Enterprise Developer Shift 2026, gathered insights from 250 developers, security engineers, and platform professionals. The results underscore a looming talent crisis that many experts predict will only worsen. A staggering 69% of those surveyed anticipate that the gap in expertise between legacy and modern architectures will grow in the coming two to three years, with only 6% believing it will shrink.

Adding to this distressing picture is the competitive nature of the current job market. Around 41% of survey respondents reported facing hiring challenges over the past year. Furthermore, nearly 40% of technical professionals admitted they left a position or seriously considered doing so due to feeling stifled by outdated technology stacks.

The research highlights the critical role a developer’s technology environment plays in shaping their work experience. A notable 58% of respondents stated they spend at least 30% of their workweek on maintenance tasks rather than development. In environments primarily centered around legacy technology, this figure soars to 85%. Conversely, in organizations utilizing modern technology stacks, it drops to 51%.

According to Sebastian Gierlinger, VP of AI and IT at Storyblok, these statistics reflect a pressing issue that has been neglected by many organizations. “Engineers have been vocal about the importance of a modern tech stack, and now we're witnessing the repercussions when companies fail to heed these warnings. Talent is migrating away, and it won’t return,” he notes.

The implications of this crisis extend beyond simple efficiency concerns. When engineers are burdened with the predominantly maintenance-focused work of keeping legacy systems afloat, they miss out on opportunities to develop new skills, innovate, and create new products. This not only leads to workforce attrition but also presents a significant business challenge as organizations struggle to keep pace in an increasingly competitive and technologically sophisticated environment.
