Age-Well Design Lab Unveils Digest Report to Promote Senior Well-Being and Action Change

Age-Well Design Lab's Digest Report: A New Perspective on Senior Well-Being

On May 11, 2026, AgeWellJapan, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, launched the "Age-Well Design Lab Digest Report." This report encapsulates the laboratory's ongoing efforts to build a society where everyone can grow older positively. Historically, the narrative around seniors has been one of dependency; however, this perception is shifting. The report synthesizes insights gained from dialogues with seniors, municipalities, companies, and universities, providing a fresh perspective on what it means to age well.

Three Pillars of the Report

The report organizes the concept of "Age-Well" into three key chapters:

Chapter 1: Exploring Age-Well - A Future Through Dialogue

This first chapter features engaging discussions with prominent figures like Hiriko Akiyama, honorary professor at the University of Tokyo, Yoshiki Ishikawa, president of Well-being for Planet Earth, Takashi Maeno from Keio University, and Yuji Kuroiwa, the governor of Kanagawa Prefecture. They delve into vital issues such as well-being, ageism, and preventative health. Within these conversations, they outline the direction society should pursue to adapt to an aging population.

Chapter 2: Designing Age-Well - Co-Creation and Practice

The second chapter distills dialogue skills that encourage behavioral transformation among seniors into six actionable insights. Collaborating with Persol Holdings, the report also presents objective data highlighting the high well-being of the Age-Well Designers—individuals who guide and support seniors. The introduction of the "Age-Well Design Award" adds further credibility as it showcases real-world examples of shifts in personal and corporate values, indicating a growing societal commitment to Age-Well initiatives.

Chapter 3: Living Age-Well - Senior Listening Interviews

In this chapter, readers encounter relatable stories from seniors embodying Age-Well principles. Notable individuals include Ikeda, who has expanded her activities on YouTube, and Iida, who owns a 145-year-old sword shop. These narratives provide concrete examples of diverse lifestyles and sketch out a clearer picture of the "next-generation senior" identity.

Celebrating the Report's Launch

In celebration of the report's release, digest videos from the previous year's "Age-Well Conference" and "Age-Well Festival" have been made available. These videos offer a glimpse into the dynamic events and initiatives that reflect the Age-Well spirit.

Understanding Age-Well

The concept of Age-Well is about embracing aging positively while valuing emotional richness and continuous challenges. It shifts focus from external states to internal emotions and thoughts, emphasizing actions driven by self-awareness, challenges, and discoveries, illustrated through the "Age-Well Map."

Future Directions

Based on the insights derived from the report, AgeWellJapan aims to further accelerate the societal implementation of Age-Well principles. This includes fostering collaboration with companies for new business development and service design, engaging with municipalities for local demonstrations, and promoting outreach through conferences and festivals. The report serves as a foundational dialogue tool among diverse stakeholders—companies, municipalities, educational institutions, and more—to spark new value creation in our increasingly aging society.
