New Symphony Project at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre to Feature Legendary Composition

Exciting New Era Begins at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre

The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre has announced a groundbreaking new initiative set to launch on April 1, 2026, with Yamada Kazuki stepping in as its artistic director for the music division. This marks the theatre’s first venture into a dual leadership model, alongside Toshiro Okada, who oversees the performing arts sector.

The new project, entitled "Yamada Kazuki & Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Symphony Urban Project," aims to amplify the creative output of musical performances, focusing particularly on Japanese works. The inaugural piece under Yamada’s direction will be the illustrious 'Symphonic Transformation' composed by Mizuno Osamu. Known for its massive scale, this composition incorporates a rich tapestry of classical, jazz, and folk music, and requires a large assembly of musicians—around 700 for its premiere in 1992.

The upcoming performance is forecasted to reunite renowned taiko drummer Hayashi Eitetsu, the Tokyo Mixed Choir, and the Kuritomi Choir, alongside the dependable Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra—all of whom Yamada has profound trust in. The themes for this project include 'near-future,' 'global outreach from the theatre,' and 'crossover,' proudly marking the beginning of an era filled with new creativity and challenges.

A Message from Yamada Kazuki, The Next Artistic Director

“Finally, the revival of the largest symphonic work in history is becoming a reality! It’s rare to find such a grand scale of composition worldwide, and for it to be created and performed by a Japanese artist is astonishing. Over the years, the perception that 'bigger is better' has shifted, and the pandemic hastened this transition, leading to fewer large-scale projects lately.

Thus, I wish to return to the essence of coming together. Public halls exist to foster gathering, acting as important venues for revitalizing social and human connections. Now is the time for grand performances that ignite the stage and audience with fervor, making 'Symphonic Transformation' the perfect piece for this mission.

As I take on the position of artistic director at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, I want this premiere of 'Symphonic Transformation' to be the first step towards our 'Symphony Urban Project.' I hope everyone will look forward to it!”

In-Depth: Yamada Kazuki's Vision

Question 1: Why did you choose this piece for your debut performance?

"Previously, while conducting Mizuno Osamu's Fourth Symphony with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, I experienced a unique sensation as if the music was forming from within me, leading me to become a fervent admirer of his compositions. 'Symphonic Transformation' represents the peak of his work, and since its 1992 premiere, its revival was deemed 'impossible.' Hearing that sparked my instinctive desire to challenge this notion.

As Mizuno is currently in great health at 91, I was particularly drawn to reviving this piece in his presence. However, the piece's magnitude demands extraordinary collaboration and creativity from the entire Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre team, aiming to showcase how we can unite to present this masterpiece."

Question 2: What is your main focus for this performance?

"While I will arrange the piece to suit the theatre’s capacity, it's critical that we maintain its inherent power and vividness. We’re working with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, alongside the Tokyo and Kuritomi Choirs—the same combination as the original premiere. It’s going to be a comprehensive effort using the best possible cast, making it essential for us to succeed together.

I am nervously excited as this is my first time conducting such a monumental work. Still, beyond simply concluding this performance, we must consider its broader implications. The messages embedded in 'Symphonic Transformation' resonate deeply with today's society, encouraging harmony amid chaos.”

Looking Ahead: Global Aspirations

Question 3: What will you send out to the world from this theatre?

"While saying 'from Ikebukuro to the world' is easy, executing this vision is a challenge. The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre has remarkable creativity and production capabilities, but achieving global recognition requires an amplification of imagination and innovation from all of us.

As someone who values harmony, I believe we must learn from history while generating new values, as this is essential for opening the world’s doors. I see my role as ensuring the theatre becomes a spring of talent and ideas. Although tangible results won't appear overnight, I feel a strong sense of responsibility to aim for this direction.

One day, I hope we can present projects to the world that reflect Japan’s unique approaches, something never seen before on a global scale. That would be extraordinary!"
