Einride and Scan Sverige Collaborate to Electrify Refrigerated Freight Operations
Einride and Scan Sverige Join Forces for Sustainable Refrigerated Transportation
In a significant move towards achieving climate goals, Einride AB has announced a partnership with Scan Sverige, the leading meat producer in Sweden, to electrify temperature-controlled freight operations. This collaboration underscores a growing trend in the logistics sector towards adopting scalable, fossil-free solutions, especially in food and grocery logistics where efficiency and emissions reduction are paramount.
Addressing Decarbonization Challenges
Refrigerated transportation is among the most challenging segments to decarbonize due to stringent delivery schedules, high energy demands, and the need for reliability. However, the partnership aims to tackle this challenge by deploying Einride’s cutting-edge electric heavy-duty vehicles on one of Scan Sverige’s critical routes spanning approximately 160 kilometers between Linköping and Eskilstuna. This route accounts for around 25% of Scan Sverige’s refrigerated outbound volume, making it a strategic focus for reducing emissions.
Currently, traditional diesel trucks dominate this sector, but by replacing them with electric vehicles, Scan Sverige anticipates a reduction of approximately 860 tonnes of CO₂e emissions annually. This not only supports the company's ambitious sustainability goals but also aligns with the broader movement towards greener freight solutions amidst increasing regulatory pressure.
Einride's Unique Solution
Einride is known for its innovative platform that combines electric heavy-duty vehicles with its proprietary optimization software, Saga AI, and an integrated charging infrastructure. This cohesive system allows for a seamless transition to electrified freight without sacrificing delivery precision. Daily operations can embed charging directly into the workflow, with primary depot charging occurring at Scan Sverige’s Linköping facility and supplemental opportunity charging provided at Einride’s strategically located charging stations along the route.
By optimizing vehicle charging during mandatory driver rest periods, the partnership ensures minimal downtime and maximizes asset utilization. Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, commented on the collaboration, stating, "The addition of Scan Sverige strengthens Einride's growing portfolio of enterprise customers and highlights the rising demand for scalable, fossil-free freight solutions."
Commitment to Sustainability
Elina Matsdotter, Chief Sustainability Officer at Scan Sverige, emphasized the importance of this transition. “Electrifying the route between Linköping and Eskilstuna enables us to continue reducing emissions and contribute to the development of fossil-free transport,” she said.
This partnership not only exemplifies a shift towards more sustainable practices within heavy industries but also points to the increasing commercial momentum behind electric freight solutions. Currently, Einride boasts over 30 enterprise customers across seven countries and expects an annual recurring revenue of approximately $92 million from existing contracts, alongside over $800 million in potential long-term revenue through various joint business plans with key clients.
