Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Achieves Top Tier in Chemistry Research Globally

In a remarkable achievement, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) has been recognized as one of the top institutions in the field of chemistry, making its way into the global top 1% according to the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) update released in November 2025. This ranking signifies that XJTLU's number of citations in chemistry is among the highest globally, placing it amongst elite institutions worldwide over the past decade.

The ESI, developed by Clarivate Analytics, is a vital analytical tool that evaluates research performance across various disciplines, using metrics like publication numbers, citations received, and citations per paper published. Specifically, XJTLU has published a total of 381 chemistry papers in the last ten years, amassing an impressive 8,450 citations. In broader terms, the university has 6,191 papers indexed in the Web of Science with an overall citation count of 92,496.

To put this achievement into perspective, XJTLU stands out among 2,179 institutions that have made it to the ESI Top 1% in chemistry, highlighting its dedication and commitment to advancing research in this critical scientific area. Professor Li Yang, the Associate Dean for Research at the School of Science, commented on this accomplishment, stating that it reflects both the institution's efforts and the strategic initiatives implemented within their research framework.

Professor Yang further emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving these results. The university has invested in cutting-edge facilities, creating an environment that fosters innovation and encourages both faculty and students to think creatively. She stated, "Reaching the global Top 1% in chemistry reflects not only our achievements but also the strategic research initiatives implemented within our School of Science."

Looking ahead, the School of Science is not resting on its laurels. Plans are in place to enhance collaborative projects that align with current global trends and societal needs. By placing significant emphasis on supporting early career researchers, XJTLU aims to nurture the next generation of scientific leaders who will continue to drive innovation forward.

This recognition comes on the heels of XJTLU's recent achievement in September when it entered the ESI Top 1% for the fields of economics and business. With chemistry now added to the list, the university boasts a total of six disciplines ranked in the ESI Top 1%, including engineering, computer science, general social sciences, environment/ecology, economics, and now chemistry.

XJTLU’s remarkable progress within the scientific community illustrates its growing influence and commitment to high-caliber research. The latest ranking not only enhances the institution's visibility on a global scale but also solidifies its status as a leader in advancing knowledge and innovation in chemistry and beyond.

As a university dedicated to providing quality education and fostering research excellence, XJTLU continues to make strides in shaping the future of scientific inquiry and discovery. The institution's continued investment in research capabilities and academic collaborations positions it favorably in meeting the challenges and advancements in the ever-evolving landscape of chemistry and other fields of study.
