Otis Brazil Enhances Accessibility at Christ the Redeemer with Modernized Elevators and Escalators

Otis Brazil Enhances Accessibility at Christ the Redeemer

Otis Brazil has successfully completed significant modernization efforts on the elevators at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, located in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca National Park. This initiative, which started after two decades of service, aims to not only improve the reliability and performance of the current systems but also to enhance accessibility for all visitors, especially those with limited mobility.

Installed initially in 2003, the old elevators and escalators had served millions of tourists who make the journey to this world-renowned landmark. With advancements in technology and a growing focus on accessibility, Otis recognized the need to revamp these installations. The modernization includes the replacement of outdated machinery and controls, along with the introduction of new signage and user-friendly fixtures to aid in navigation.

In addition to the modernization of the existing elevators, Otis Brazil is also introducing four new escalators and two inclined elevators to the site. This upgrade has been commissioned by Trem do Corcovado, a concessionnaire managing access to the monument, as part of a revitalization plan spearheaded by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). This plan aims to ensure that the enhancements align with environmental conservation efforts while also improving visitor experience.

Álvaro Netto, Managing Director of Otis Brazil, expressed pride in the company’s longstanding commitment to facilitating accessible transport for millions of passengers each year. He highlighted how these upgrades are not only about technological advancements but also about ensuring every visitor can enjoy the experience of visiting one of the world’s most iconic sites without barriers.

The three modernized Gen2® elevators now connect the various platforms of Alto Corcovado, where visitors can take in breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro. The replaced escalators are specifically designed for outdoor durability, ensuring they can withstand the unique environmental challenges presented at this high-profile tourist location. The introduction of inclined elevators is particularly noteworthy as they offer essential access for individuals who might struggle with stairs or standing in queues.

Otis's dedication to maintaining excellent performance and reliability extends beyond these upgrades. For the past two decades, the company has been responsive to the needs of their customers, ensuring minimal disruptions and earning trust through consistent service quality. This ongoing relationship with the concessionaire further deepens as Otis continues to uphold its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction in Brazil, which coincidentally also marks the company's 120th anniversary in the country this year.

Through these enhancements, Otis aims to create a more accessible environment at the Christ the Redeemer statue, ensuring that the experience remains enjoyable for every visitor, regardless of their physical abilities. Otis not only commits to providing top-notch elevator solutions but also plays a pivotal role in giving people the freedom to connect with iconic landmarks and the stories they tell.
