Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Collaborates with Uzbekistan
On October 10, 2023, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan (MOE). This collaboration aims to enhance power supply stability and promote decarbonization technologies in the region.
Key Areas of Collaboration
The MOU outlines three primary areas of collaboration:
1.
Existing Facilities Enhancement: MHI will utilize existing power plants' equipment supplied to Uzbekistan to explore potential modifications necessary for ensuring stable power supply.
2.
Hydrogen Co-Firing Potential: The parties will examine the feasibility of hydrogen co-firing in new gas turbine combined cycle power plants.
3.
Future Power Development Plans: They will investigate future power development strategies employing various decarbonization technologies.
This joint research will extend over two years, following a work plan agreed upon between MHI and MOE and receiving financial support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) through its Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project Subsidy.
Uzbekistan's Renewable Energy Goals
Recently, the Uzbekistan government set forth a renewable energy introduction plan, aiming for over 54% of the country's power generation to stem from renewable sources by 2030. MHI has previously contributed to the establishment of thermal power equipment in Uzbekistan, assisting in stable power supply amid growing demand. The company also has the capability to propose various decarbonization technologies, such as hydrogen and ammonia co-firing, and Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).
Through this research initiative, MHI aims to assess MOE's outlined future power composition and support the introduction of sustainable systems conducive to enhancing decarbonization efforts.
Strengthening Energy Cooperation
The Japanese METI and the Uzbek MOE signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) in January 2024, focused on leveraging all available energy sources and technologies, including renewable energy, hydrogen and ammonia, synthetic fuels, CCUS, and high-efficiency power generation technologies. This cooperation agreement aims for a realistic energy transition, bolstering energy collaboration between Japan and Uzbekistan. The current joint research aligns with the MOC, fostering further cooperation between the two nations.
Commitment to Carbon Neutrality
The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group is strategically advancing toward carbon neutrality by 2040, focusing on decarbonization during energy supply. MHI remains committed to sustainable initiatives similar to this joint research endeavor, contributing to the realization of a sustainable carbon-neutral society.
