Tiryaki Agro and Djibouti Ports Authority Collaborate for Tadjourah Port Development
In a significant development aimed at boosting the logistics and trading capacity of Djibouti, Tiryaki Agro has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA). This agreement, signed on July 22, 2026, signifies both organizations' commitment to advancing the long-term development, modernization, and future operations of the Tadjourah Port. The envisioned project is set to bolster Djibouti's strategic position as a commercial and logistical hub in the region, particularly for agricultural trade and supply chain resilience throughout the Horn of Africa.
The MoU outlines a collaborative framework through which Tiryaki Agro and DPFZA will evaluate the technical, commercial, and operational aspects necessary for the future development of the Tadjourah Port. With the completion of feasibility studies and subsequent successful negotiations, the project anticipates significant improvements in port infrastructure, an enhancement in logistical and storage capacity, and better handling of bulk and agricultural products. Additionally, it aims to strengthen the regional economy and establish the groundwork for negotiating a long-term concession agreement for the port's management and operation.
This initiative builds on the pre-existing partnership between Tiryaki Agro and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which highlighted Djibouti's potential as a pivotal gateway for regional trade and food security in the Horn of Africa. The initial support from IFC included feasibility studies, planning, and stakeholder engagement, laying a solid foundation for this landmark agreement. This collaboration embodies a shared commitment to unlocking Djibouti’s potential as a strategic logistical center while fostering a more resilient and sustainable future driven by private sector growth.
Süleyman Tiryakioğlu, CEO of Tiryaki Agro, expressed optimism, stating, "The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding marks a significant advancement in our long-term commitment to Djibouti and our vision of contributing to the nation's role as a regional gateway for trade and logistics. We sincerely appreciate the vision and support of the Djibouti government, the collaboration and leadership of DPFZA, and the valuable partnership with IFC, whose advice has been instrumental in shaping this opportunity from its early stages. We look forward to continuing our joint endeavors as we advance through the project’s next phases and explore its potential to enhance regional trade, food security, and sustainable economic development."
The MoU reflects Djibouti's long-term vision to strengthen its status as a strategic logistical gateway connecting Africa, the Middle East, and global markets. Through the ongoing collaboration between the Djibouti government, DPFZA, IFC, and Tiryaki Agro, the project aims to create favorable conditions for future investments in the Tadjourah Port, supporting more efficient agricultural trade, increased supply chain resilience, and private sector-led sustainable growth throughout the Horn of Africa.
