The 52nd Noh and Kyogen Appreciation Meeting - Suma Dream Vol. 2
On October 4, 2025, the National Noh Theatre in Shibuya, Tokyo, will host the compelling
52nd Noh and Kyogen Appreciation Meeting. This year’s theme,
Suma Dream Vol. 2, uniquely highlights performances inspired by Suma in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Tickets are currently available through Confetti, operated by Longrun Planning Co., Ltd., based in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
The
Shinso-kai, led by the distinguished Noh performer
Makoto Sakai, proudly presents this event. Makoto Sakai will be taking on the leading role in the grand Noh piece
Genshō, which features
Emperor Murakami as the main character. This performance marks a significant debut for Sakai. Accompanying him in an important supporting role is the esteemed
Bunshi Takeda, who will portray Fujiwara no Morinaga.
Adding to the allure of this event, the human national treasures,
Mansaku Nomura and his son
Mansai Nomura, will perform the Kyogen play
Satsuma no Kami, which is connected to
Taira no Tadakuni, who met his end at Suma Ura. This performance emphasizes familial collaboration and showcases the talents of this legendary duo.
The gathering will also include traditional Noh dances like
Atsumori,
Matsukaze, and
Suma Genji, all thematically linked to Suma, ensuring a rich inclusion of cultural heritage in the program. Additionally, attendees will be treated to an engaging talk by
Yasushi Hayashi, titled
“Things that Come and Go at Suma Ura,” which promises to be both enlightening and enjoyable.
