Central Michigan University's Bold Initiative: Forge the Future

Central Michigan University (CMU) has embarked on a monumental journey with the launch of 'Forge the Future,' its most ambitious fundraising campaign to date. Announced on September 21, 2026, the campaign aims to raise significant funds for the future of educational opportunities at CMU, having already accumulated an impressive $237 million from donors.

CMU President Neil MacKinnon emphasized the transformative power of a CMU education, stating, "A CMU education sparks a fire within us — building resilience, advancing careers, and fueling a drive to change the world." He urged the CMU community to ignite their passion for supporting future generations of students through this pivotal campaign.

With over 170 students participating in the kickoff gala held at the John G. Kulhavi Events Center on September 18, the event underscored the active involvement of current students in shaping the future of the campaign. They showcased their research projects and performed various artistic pieces, creating a lively atmosphere that brought together hundreds of alumni and supporters.

According to Jennifer Cotter, Vice President for Advancement, the impact of 'Forge the Future' will not be solely measured by the funds raised but by the lasting opportunities and significant changes it creates within the university community. "This campaign is focused on the transformative effects philanthropy has on our university, our surrounding communities, and most importantly, today’s students and those yet to come," she remarked.

The campaign is built upon four essential pillars:
1. Transform Student Experiences: Focused on enhancing the CMU student experience, this pillar aims to cultivate personal growth and academic success.
2. Engaged Connectivity: By fostering a sense of belonging among students, faculty, staff, and alumni, this pillar ensures that everyone thrives and excels together.
3. The CMU Impact: Highlighting CMU's global initiatives, this pillar seeks to enhance the university's impact on lives, communities, and local businesses.
4. Fired Up Initiatives: This involves rallying support for large-scale initiatives that benefit students, communities, and the university as a whole.

President MacKinnon noted, "This historic campaign addresses today's needs while shaping the experiences, programs, and opportunities for tomorrow's students and alumni. Together, we are forging a better, stronger future."

Since the campaign’s quiet phase began in 2021, contributions from thousands of donors have collectively set new giving records annually, with nearly $83 million raised during the 2026 fiscal year. This consistent support is instrumental in bolstering academic programs, broadening real-world learning prospects, and enhancing scholarships and facilities that foster student success.

The campaign's recent gifts have already made a profound impact across campus, including the establishment of scholarships and improvements to academic programs and facilities. Notably, a new student wellness program focused on self-care and life balance has been launched, along with expedited projects that further CMU's contributions to research and creative scholarship. A landmark project is the construction of the new MyMichigan Health CMU Medical Education Building in Saginaw, soon to be the future home of the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at CMU.

The 'Forge the Future' campaign is co-chaired by Sarah Opperman, a Midland alumna and former Chair of the CMU Board of Trustees, who emphasizes the collective responsibility to empower students. She stated, "All of us have an extraordinary opportunity to give students access to the programs, experiences, and connections they need to achieve meaningful impact in their careers and communities. CMU is our university, and students are our cause."

With the campaign expected to continue through June 2031, it represents a long-term commitment to providing essential resources for generations of students. CMU’s dedication to improving educational opportunities reflects a broader passion for nurturing talent and potential within its student body.
