CATL Introduces the Game-Changing TENER Stack
On May 8, 2025, at the ees Europe 2025 exhibition in Munich, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited) astonished the energy sector by launching TENER Stack, the world's first high-capacity energy storage system with an extraordinary capacity of 9 MWh. This innovation is a strategic leap in energy storage technology, aiming to meet the rapidly growing global energy demands, including those from AI-managed data centers and industrial electrification.
A Step Forward in Energy Storage
The TENER Stack is designed with the intention of delivering substantial economic benefits for utility companies, developers, and industrial users by optimizing every square meter of installation space. According to Amanda Xu, CATL's Technical Director for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in Europe, this solution addresses the evolving expectations for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). It promises high energy density, reduced footprint, and simpler configurations, thus overcoming traditional limitations in power output and transportation.
Innovative Technology Features
One of the key advancements in the TENER Stack is its incorporation of CATL's high-energy cells featuring a five-year zero-degradation technology. This allows for a 45% increase in volume utilization and a 50% enhancement in energy density compared to standard 20-foot container systems. With a maximum internal capacity of 9 MWh, the TENER Stack can charge 150 electric vehicles or power an average household in Germany for up to six years.
Moreover, the TENER Stack is compatible with both centralized and distributed energy conversion architectures. This dual technological pathway ensures seamless integration with crucial AC side equipment and supports a wider array of network applications.
Optimized Space Utilization
Economically, TENER Stack presents significant advantages. Deploying an 800 MWh storage system using TENER Stack requires nearly one-third fewer containers than traditional 6 MWh systems. This reduction lowers ancillary energy conversion systems and mitigates hidden costs associated with oversized systems, leading to a 40% improvement in land use efficiency. Developers can anticipate up to a 20% cut in total construction costs when utilizing this innovative solution.
Seamless Transport Capabilities
In addressing logistical challenges, CATL's innovative design of the TENER Stack includes a two-in-one model that keeps each semi-unit strictly below the 36-ton limit — a legal threshold in many nations. This compliance ensures that transportation adheres to 99% of global market regulations. The modular structure allows for the use of standard delivery methods, including regular spreaders and container liners, significantly reducing waiting times and specialized transport expenses by up to 35%.
With a lower center of gravity and agility for routes constrained by height regulations, TENER Stack can adapt to various transportation scenarios, including bridges and rural areas, showcasing the benefits of its advanced structural design.
Enhanced Safety and Temperature Management Standards
Safety is paramount in the design of the TENER Stack. It utilizes CATL's lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are known for their thermal stability, ensuring safety under global compliance standards. The upgraded gas sensors boast 40% greater sensitivity, activating suppression systems 35% quicker. The three-layer insulation design enhances fire resistance up to two hours, while the system meets seismic standards IEEE693, capable of withstanding magnitude-9 earthquakes and category-5 hurricanes.
In addition, the Thermal Management System (TMS) minimizes heat output, reduces spatial demands and maintenance costs, and maintains noise levels at a manageable 65 dB(A) at one meter, ideal for urban environments.
More than Just Batteries
By the end of November 2024, CATL's ESS products were deployed in over 1,700 projects worldwide across various climate zones and operational environments. In 2023, CATL introduced TENER, a twenty-foot equivalent energy storage system (TEU) featuring a five-year zero-degradation technology, along with TENER FLEX, a rack system for flexible deployment. The TENER Stack builds on the proven performance of both previous models, merging their benefits with new levels of capacity and transportability.
CATL aims to bolster its commitment to assisting global partners in accelerating the energy transition, providing greater capacity in smaller footprints, safely and sustainably. Hank Zhao, the Technical Director of ESS Europe at CATL, states, "TENER Stack is colossal, flexible, reliable, and silent. We deliver not just energy storage solutions but accessibility to energy that can be implemented globally. Each breakthrough in energy density will unlock more value with a smaller carbon footprint," reinforcing CATL's vision for the future of energy solutions.
