Real Estate Giants Collaborate to Provide Rent Data for Consumer Index Improvement

Collaborative Effort to Enhance Rent Data in Japan

Three leading real estate firms in Japan—Sekisui House Real Estate Holdings, Daiwa Living, and Daito Kentaku Partners—have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration to provide substantial data on rental residences to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' statistics bureau for the first time. This initiative aims to contribute to the research on the consumer price index (CPI) by supplying critical data regarding rental prices, structure, and area of rental properties. The collaboration reflects an acknowledgment of the importance of accurate rental data in understanding consumer expenditures and therefore, the economic landscape of Japan.

Background of the Data Provision Initiative

As part of its mission to improve the creation and publication of the CPI, the statistics bureau conducts regular surveys to assess rental prices in the private rental market. Rental expenses have consistently constituted a large portion of household spending and are crucial for evaluating inflation and economic stability. Over the years, it has become increasingly evident that the traditional method of gathering rental data—where external teams were dispatched to conduct interviews with real estate companies—has proven inefficient and costly.

The collaboration among these three major firms aims to address these inefficiencies by harnessing a more extensive set of rental data. By consolidating their resources, Sekisui House, Daiwa Living, and Daito Kentaku Partners not only enhance the quality and quantity of the data available but also streamline the process of data collection. This partnership signals a significant shift in how rental data will be utilized in the future, making it easier for government bodies and researchers to derive insights that aid in economic planning.
