Upcoming Seminar on EU Automotive Recycling Regulation and CE Transition

Seminar Overview

On September 12, 2025, a significant seminar will be hosted focusing on the European Union's (EU) recent advancements in automotive recycling regulations, led by journalist Toru Kumagai, who has spent 35 years living in Germany.

The seminar will be conducted via Zoom from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (JST), with an option for participants to access the archived recording for two weeks at their convenience.

Key Topics to be Covered

This seminar comes after a pivotal agreement reached during the EU Environmental Ministers' meeting in June 2025, where they consented to enhance the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation, marking a significant step towards promoting a circular economy (CE) within the automotive sector.
The new guidelines stipulate rigorous mandates for car manufacturers to incorporate recycled plastic into new vehicles—a move that's expected to increase the percentage from 15% within six years of enforcement, reaching 25% a decade later. This approach demands that automotive designs facilitate easier disassembly and component replacement, aligning with the EU’s efforts to mitigate waste and reduce environmental impact.

EU's Strategic Intentions

The EU’s ambition transcends the immediate environmental benefits; it aims to decrease dependency on critical raw materials sourced from countries like China, thereby bolstering economic security. The commitment to utilizing recycled materials reflects a broader vision of sustainability in industry practices.

Germany's automotive sector is currently navigating challenges associated with the widespread adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and copious CO2 emissions reductions. The mandated incorporation of recycled plastics will inevitably lead to increased manufacturing costs. Additionally, major European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have kicked off recycling projects targeting lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices despite potential financial strains.

In-Depth Presentation and Q&A

During the seminar, Mr. Kumagai will shed light on the:
1. Recent legal agreements among EU member states to strengthen automotive recycling.
2. Current states of automotive recycling practices.
3. Cases of manufacturers facing regulatory actions concerning recycling compliance.
4. Trends in the EU's transition towards a circular economy.
5. Responses from the automotive sector to these stringent new standards.
6. Emerging initiatives surrounding recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
7. An interactive Q&A session for participants to engage with the topic.
