Lutzie 43 Foundation and Highway Safety Office Empower Dougherty County Students with Safe Driving Knowledge

Lutzie 43 Foundation Partners with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety

The Lutzie 43 Foundation is set to make a significant impact on young drivers in Dougherty County, Georgia. In conjunction with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, the foundation will conduct a Safe Driving Summit at Dougherty Comprehensive High School on May 12 and Monroe High School on May 13. This initiative aims to instill safe driving habits among high school students, using engaging, informative presentations that will educate them on preventing distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving.

The focus of the summit will be centered around the 43 Key Seconds initiative, which is designed to remind young drivers to take critical steps to prepare themselves before getting behind the wheel. The event will feature discussions from various experts, including road safety professionals, first responders, and individuals who have experienced the life-altering effects of vehicle crashes firsthand.

Mike Lutzenkirchen, the Executive Director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation, emphasizes the importance of educating young drivers. He stated, "Educating young drivers is one of the most meaningful ways we can reduce preventable tragedies on our roads." The event aims to make a lasting impression on the students, reinforcing that while they learn in the classroom, the lessons about safety extend beyond academic figures to real-life implications.

Speakers at the summit will include Mike Lutzenkirchen, who will share his personal testimony about the tragic accident that claimed his son, Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn University football star. His experience serves as a heartfelt reminder of the dire consequences of reckless driving. The emotional weight of this story is intended to resonate deeply with the students, motivating them to adopt safer driving practices.

Allen Poole, the Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, shared the goal of achieving zero traffic fatalities by mid-century. He stated, "Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one due to a preventable accident."

In addition to the speeches, students will engage in interactive hands-on sessions. These breakout activities, led by first responders, trauma care specialists, law enforcement, and truck industry professionals, will provide students with essential knowledge about the realities of road safety. For example, students will have the chance to go inside a large truck to understand the perspectives and challenges faced by professional drivers, such as recognizing blind spots and understanding stopping distances.

At the conclusion of each summit, every participant will receive a physical 43 Key Seconds key. This tangible reminder encourages them to take 43 seconds prior to driving to ensure they are in a safe mindset—committing to have a Clear Head, Clear Hands, Clear Eyes, and to Click It.

Michael Fowler, the Dougherty County Coroner, also highlighted the necessity of such initiatives by stating, "I don't want to just pronounce deaths — I want to prevent them. This program doesn't merely teach rules; it makes the risks real. When the message comes early, it can substantially reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities."

The schedules for these impactful events are set for May 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dougherty Comprehensive High School and on May 13 at Monroe Comprehensive High School, also from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This collaboration between educational institutions and safety organizations underscores a commitment to protecting the lives of future drivers.
