RECOTECH Initiates Trial for Waste Management Systems in Yokohama City

RECOTECH Initiates New Waste Management Trial in Yokohama

RECOTECH Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based company specializing in resource circulation platforms, is set to kick off an important trial for its waste management optimization system in Yokohama City. This trial will focus on around 200 facilities associated with the city starting from December 15, 2025. This initial phase is a critical step towards the full-scale deployment expected by April 2026, which will encompass approximately 1,200 facilities.

Background and Purpose of the Trial

As part of its efforts to promote a circular economy and achieve a decarbonized society, Yokohama City has been reviewing its waste management processes for the data and transportation of resources and waste generated by around 1,200 municipal facilities. During this review, RECOTECH's next-generation waste weighing management system, known as 'pool', was selected to implement a new waste management model. The trial will serve as a preliminary testing ground for the full system rollout, allowing for the implementation of digital technologies and evaluation of their effectiveness.

Overview of the Test Operations

The test operations slated to begin on December 15, 2025, will focus on two primary areas:

1. Visualization of Waste Data: Using the 'pool' system, data related to the types and quantities of generated waste and resources will be recorded and analyzed in real-time.

2. Coordination with Collection Operations: The platform will also allow for streamlined collection processes based on real-time data sharing, making operations more efficient.

By optimizing the management of waste and collection processes, Yokohama City's authorities anticipate a significant reduction in the administrative efforts typically required for waste management tasks. With real-time data sharing, they expect to ensure consistency between waste generation and collection data, leading to improved efficiency overall.

Future Expansion Plans

Building on insights gained from the trial, Yokohama City plans to optimize system requirements to roll out the waste management system to all 1,200 facilities by April 2026. This urban waste management model aims to leverage digital technology for both the efficiency of resource collection and the promotion of circular economy principles. There is also potential for expansion to other municipalities and private facilities, fostering the growth of circular cities.

Insights from the CEO

Nobuyuki Nozaki, the CEO of RECOTECH, expressed his enthusiasm for initiating this new waste and resource management model in a major urban area. He emphasized the critical role this project will play in supporting Yokohama City's infrastructure for waste processing and its future resource circulation platform. He noted, “We are committed to extensive collaborations to drive this initiative forward, and we aim to showcase the sustainability of smart urban infrastructure throughout Asia as we expand our technology, 'pool', across various locales.”
