Okayama University Hosts EPOK Exchange Program Presentation and Success Reports
On October 8, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, held an informative session to promote its exchange program known as EPOK (Exchange Program Okayama). This event aimed to encourage both current students and potential participants for the program scheduled for the fall of 2026. As of April 2025, the EPOK initiative will allow students from all faculties to study at 63 affiliated universities worldwide.
During the presentation, Associate Professor Junko Obayashi from the Institute of Global Studies inspired participants by discussing the program's structure, application processes, and crucial timelines. Her emphatic slogan, “Let’s expand our campus to the world,” energized the audience and set an enthusiastic tone.
Following her introduction, Hiroki Tomita, a fourth-year education student who recently returned from an exchange in the United States, shared his personal experiences. Struggling with communication before departure, he expressed concerns about making friends and adapting to life in an English-speaking country. He stated,
“Before my trip, I was worried about whether I could make friends, as I didn’t consider myself proficient in English. Throughout the exchange, I faced challenges such as not being able to articulate my thoughts or fully understanding my peers. However, I learned the importance of making an effort to communicate, whether through my clumsy attempts at speaking or asking questions when confused.”
His message resonated with attendees, emphasizing that the willingness to communicate is essential for successful interactions.
The success report segment featured presentations from three students, each detailing their experiences abroad. They discussed classroom learning, student life at their respective host universities, practical preparations before travel, accommodation details, and local cost of living—providing practical insights into what future exchange students might expect.
