Osaka Electro-Communication University (OECU), located in Neyagawa and Shijonawate cities of Osaka Prefecture, is set to boldly innovate its STEM curriculum by integrating AI instructors into its physics and mathematics programs starting in April 2026. This initiative marks the first time AI tools will be utilized in core science courses, traditionally dominated by face-to-face instruction.

This remarkable advancement is powered by a collaboration with DOU Inc., a Tokyo-based company led by CEO Tatsuya Ishibe. The service leverages a large language model, specifically ChatGPT, tailored to meet the unique educational insights held by OECU. The goal is to establish a novel education model that offers personalized academic support, enhancing the learning experience for each student based on their individual proficiency and study history.

Key Features of the AI Instructor Program

1. A Pioneering Initiative:
While AI has been adopted in language and career education, this program is the first to introduce AI in core science subjects, highlighting OECU’s commitment to integrating modern technology into its educational framework.

The system promotes a collaborative learning environment where instructors, teaching assistants (TAs), and AI instructors work in tandem. In each session, the AI instructor analyzes the student's prior performance and understanding, generating tailored review questions. This innovative approach includes various formats, enabling students to upload photos of handwritten calculations, which the AI can assess and provide feedback on. When facing challenges, students can engage in chats with the AI for guidance, with feedback being stored in a personal database for continuous learning.
