Recognizing these shifting roles, many major IT vendors in Japan are accelerating their recruitment and training of FDEs.
For instance, major firms like Hitachi have announced plans to expand their pool of domestic FDEs significantly over the next few years. By July 2026, Hitachi aims to increase its number of FDEs from about 300 to approximately 1,000. This trajectory underscores the rising significance of engineers who can immerse themselves in client ecosystems and oversee the entire lifecycle of AI design and implementation.

FDEs represent a relatively new role in the industry. Finding candidates who possess comprehensive understanding of client operations, strong proposal skills, and the ability to implement AI solutions through external recruitment can be challenging. Honshitsu believes that investing in the current engineering workforce is a viable solution. By leveraging the existing skills and experiences of current engineers, the FDE Development Program aims to cultivate FDEs who can adeptly navigate the process from identifying challenges to conveying AI proposals and ensuring their execution.
Five Key Features of the FDE Development Program

Comprehensive Curriculum: The program provides a holistic approach that goes beyond merely learning to use AI tools. Participants will engage in identifying client business challenges, designing AI strategies, making proposals, implementing solutions, and sustaining operations through practical case studies and exercises.

Tailored Practical Training: Training will be customized based on the specific AI tools that the participant company and its clients prefer, ensuring versatile applicability rather than dependency on specific tools.

Structured Learning Phases: The program consists of four stages, from introducing AI tools to all engineers to selecting and training members as FDEs based on their aptitudes, ensuring gradual and comprehensive learning.

Flexibility in Delivery: Courses will be available in both online and in-person formats to accommodate varying work arrangements and project schedules, offering flexibility for engineers who are on-site with clients.

Small Scale Initiation: Companies can start the program with a minimum of just three participants, allowing them to test the program's effectiveness before expanding their involvement further.
Course Structure and Costs
The FDE Development Program is divided into four core courses:
- - STEP 1: AI Setup Training - Goal: Equip all engineers to utilize AI in their duties. Estimated Cost: ¥50,000 per participant.
- - STEP 2: AI Utilization Course - Goal: Enable engineers to leverage AI effectively for practical work. Estimated Cost: ¥200,000 per participant.
- - STEP 3: AI Agent Development Course - Goal: Teach automation of routine operations. Estimated Cost: ¥300,000 per participant.
- - STEP 4: FDE Development Course - Goal: Empower candidates to propose and implement AI projects. Estimated Cost: ¥400,000 per participant.

Honshitsu has developed this program in alignment with human resource development support subsidies, which can cover up to 75% of eligible training costs, subject to certain criteria. This grants companies the opportunity to introduce the program with a reduced financial burden.
