Boston Society for Architecture Celebrates 2025 Design Award Winners
Last night, the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) held its prestigious annual awards gala, shining a spotlight on the remarkable individuals and projects that are pushing the boundaries of architectural excellence in the Boston area. This year's event brought together architects, city planners, students, and community members to celebrate the finest contributions to the built environment that inspire and empower local communities.
A total of 31 design awards were presented, acknowledging the profound impact of architecture on society and its potential to foster change. These awards serve not only as recognition of individual talent but also as a testament to the collective efforts aimed at creating a more sustainable and equitable Boston.
Honoring the Best in Design: The Harleston Parker Medal
The evening's highlight was the announcement of the prestigious Harleston Parker Medal, awarded to the Land's Sake Farm, a project designed by PAYETTE. This accolade recognizes the most beautiful structure erected in the metropolitan Boston area over the past decade. The jury praised Land's Sake Farm for its harmonious blend of architecture and community engagement, highlighting its role in delivering educational programs and resources to the public.
The building is thoughtfully designed, featuring transparent glimpses into its workings, which enhances visitor interaction and understanding. It's not merely a farm; it transcends its functional purpose and becomes a platform for learning, accessibility, and community dialogue—all funded by community efforts, demonstrating how architecture can serve broader social goals.
People's Choice Award: A Community Vote
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the BSA also recognizes the public’s voice in architectural admiration with the People’s Choice Award. This year, the honor went to the Tozzer Anthropology Building at Harvard University, designed by Kennedy Violich Architecture, Ltd. (KVA). The People’s Choice Award allows local residents to engage with and appreciate the beauty of architecture in their neighborhoods, emphasizing a broader recognition of design’s role in their community.
Commitment to Equity and Connection
Danyson Tavares, executive director of the BSA, spoke passionately about the purpose of the awards: “Architecture is ultimately about people and the communities we serve. Our mission is to advance design that fosters equity, connection, and opportunity across Greater Boston.” This philosophy underscores the BSA's dedication to inclusive and thoughtful design, strengthening neighborhoods and creating opportunities for all.
A Collaborative Panel of Experts
Projects were meticulously evaluated by a jury comprising architects, designers, public servants, and planners from Boston and beyond. The awards distinguished three levels of achievement: Honor, Merit, and Commendation. In addition to design awards, several annual BSA awards were distributed, including the Commonwealth Award, the BSA Award of Honor, and the Earl R. Flansburgh Young Designer's Award.
Celebrating Diverse Architectural Contributions
The evening showcased a variety of projects that addressed different aspects of architectural design, from historic preservation to innovative educational facilities. Some notable awards were:
- - Honor Award for Built Design, Adaptive Reuse: Coolidge Corner Theatre by Höweler + Yoon Architecture LLP
- - Honor Award for Educational Facilities: Bates College Bonney Science Center by PAYETTE
- - Honor Award for Unbuilt Planning: TREE FORM by Kennedy Violich Architecture, KVA Matx
These recognitions not only celebrate the architectural innovators but also inspire future generations of designers to engage with their communities meaningfully.
