Shanghai Electric Achieves Top 5 Global Ranking in Desalination Projects
Shanghai Electric has recently announced that it has secured the
fifth position in the global ranking for newly built seawater desalination projects for the period from 2024 to 2025. This significant leap from its previous ranking—four places higher—is supported by the latest statistics released by the
International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) and
Global Water Intelligence (GWI).
Over the past decade, between 2016 and 2025, Shanghai Electric has demonstrated consistent improvement, now ranking
eighth globally based on the cumulative performance of implemented projects. Since its inception in 1973, IDRA has served as a non-profit organization that unites companies involved in desalination and water reuse. GWI has been providing market analytics for the global water resources sector for the past 20 years.
A spokesperson from Shanghai Electric highlighted that this achievement stems from the
strong international recognition of the company's expertise and experience in seawater desalination. He emphasized that the growth is a result of over ten years of advancements in both
thermal and membrane technologies. The company's commitment to developing eco-friendly, high-performance, and cost-effective desalination solutions is vital for addressing global water scarcity challenges.
Shanghai Electric stands out as one of the few global corporations to master the two major desalination technologies:
Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) and
Reverse Osmosis (RO). This unique capability allows the company to offer integrated solutions that combine both technologies. The expertise in seawater desalination not only supports standalone water supply needs but is also applicable across various industrial sectors.
By innovatively integrating processes for recovering waste heat and resource recycling, Shanghai Electric provides comprehensive, energy-efficient, and high-performing desalination solutions. Custom-designed systems ensure a steady supply of high-quality fresh water to critical industries in coastal regions, such as power generation, steel manufacturing, and chemical production.
For years, Shanghai Electric has garnered global acclaim for its
technical reliability, project execution capabilities, and its international brand presence. The substantial rise in rankings is bolstered by the group's technological solutions across the desalination spectrum and its proven experience in successfully delivering large-scale projects both domestically and internationally.
Among its notable projects is the
Hengyi PMB project in Brunei, recognized for its production capacity of
3 x 12,500 tons per day. This project utilizes the world’s first hybrid technology of low-temperature multi-effect distillation (LT-MED) paired with instantaneous hot water vaporization, boasting fully independent intellectual property rights.
Additionally, the
Zhejiang Petroleum Chemical Co., Ltd. heat recovery desalination project stands as the largest EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) project employing thermal distillation systems executed by Shanghai Electric in China. It achieves a cumulative output capacity of
305,000 tons per day, utilizing
Forward Multi-Effect Distillation (F-MED), powered by industrial waste heat.
Another innovative project, the
Yulong Petrochemical hybrid thermal-membrane distillation system, features a production capacity of
160,000 tons per day. This project employs a forward multi-effect distillation and reverse osmosis (F-MED-RO) integration that combines thermal and membrane processes. Its ''cascade use'' approach for recovering and recycling low-temperature industrial waste heat promises eco-friendly, low-carbon, and resource-efficient water production. This initiative stands as the largest hybrid thermal-membrane seawater desalination project globally.
Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric is determined to leverage its comprehensive technology portfolio and extensive experience from global projects to present more eco-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable sustainable water supply solutions worldwide. The company continues its commitment to tackling the global issue of water scarcity, consistently contributing with its “Chinese wisdom” and “Shanghai Electric solutions.” For more information, visit
