Community Fund Established for Mayor Ron Young Tribute Sculpture
A new initiative by community volunteers in Frederick, Maryland, aims to honor the accomplishments of former Mayor Ron Young through the establishment of the
Ron Young Tribute Sculpture Project Fund. This fund will facilitate the design, creation, and installation of a statue dedicated to Young's instrumental role in revitalizing downtown Frederick.
The sculpture is set to be prominently placed within the beautiful
Carroll Creek Linear Urban Park, an area that symbolizes the modern renaissance of downtown Frederick, celebrated for its unique design and effective flood control measures. This park not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the city but serves as an essential economic catalyst for local businesses.
Ron Young is credited with championing the
Carroll Creek project, which creatively addressed urban flooding issues while inviting visitors and boosting commerce in the downtown region. His vision led to an innovative approach to urban planning, making Frederick a model for other cities facing similar challenges. The tribute sculpture will serve to remind residents and visitors of Young's contributions and the positive changes he helped to enact.
Nationally recognized sculptor
Antonio Tobias Mendez, affectionately known as “Toby,” has been commissioned to create a magnificent seven-foot bronze sculpture of Ron Young. This artwork will be strategically positioned at the
Carroll Creek amphitheater, creating a focal point within the park. The sculpture will also feature an interpretive exhibit that not only recounts the development of Carroll Creek but also honors the collaborative efforts of multiple mayors who have strived to bring Young's vision to fruition.
This project emphasizes community involvement, with residents encouraged to participate in various ways, ensuring that the tribute accurately reflects the admiration and support for Young’s legacy. Additional information about the project, including donation opportunities and involvement details, can be found at
