Revolutionizing Pediatric Health Care in Southern California
Miller Children's & Women's Hospital, part of the MemorialCare Health System, has recently unveiled the Miller Children's Care Network, a comprehensive initiative aimed at overhauling pediatric health care access in South Los Angeles and North Orange County. This network is designed to connect families seamlessly with both primary and specialized pediatric care, enhancing the overall treatment experience for children and their families.
According to Dr. Graham Tse, Chief Medical Officer of Miller Children's & Women's Hospital, the intent behind this innovation is to redefine the landscape of pediatric health care. With the integration of primary and specialty care, families will have an easier route to exceptional medical services. This initiative aims not only to improve direct care for children but also support pediatricians through better access to resources and collaborative efforts that transcend individual practices.
In assessing the needs of the community, hospital leaders conducted surveys amongst physicians nationwide in 2021, revealing critical insights regarding the difficulties faced by pediatric specialists. Key objectives that emerged include the need to improve access to specialized services, leverage the established reputation of Miller Children’s and to enhance administrative support through shared resources and electronic medical records, fostering an environment ripe for collaboration.
Laurie Sicaeros, Chief Strategy Officer at MemorialCare, emphasized the hospital's commitment to pioneering new standards in pediatric care. The initiative promises to structure ongoing evaluations of practice patterns among network physicians, ensuring seamless cooperation which in turn guarantees timely access and high-quality care.
Currently, the Miller Children's Care Network encompasses over 100 pediatricians, integrating the efforts of the MemorialCare Medical Group along with independent community pediatricians. This collaborative effort is set to enrich the life quality of children battling chronic illnesses or facing developmental challenges. Dr. Tse further illustrated the network's goal as providing expedited, elite care for every child, with robust support systems for their families.
The network will cater not just to chronic conditions like asthma and gastrointestinal complications but also to more complex health concerns that require specialized attention. By firmly establishing partnerships between primary care providers and pediatric specialists, Miller Children’s Care Network creates a holistic approach to managing the health journeys of young patients.
Miller Children's & Women's Hospital stands out as one of just eight free-standing children's hospitals in California, treating about 13,000 children annually. The institution has developed into a regional hub for pediatric health, thanks in part to its dedicated outpatient centers located in Torrance, Fountain Valley, and Irvine. It also boasts specialists in maternal-fetal medicine and neonatology available around-the-clock to handle high-risk pregnancies and premature births in a singular, coordinated environment.
