Taiwan Strengthens Educational Ties with Europe at EAIE 2025 in Gothenburg



The 35th Annual European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference and Exhibition took place from September 9 to 12, 2025, in Gothenburg, Sweden. This year, 19 Taiwanese universities were represented by almost 50 delegates. They were coordinated by the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) with the aim of promoting academic partnerships between Taiwan and Europe and enhancing global collaboration in higher education.

Prof. Tsai-Yen Li, the Chairman of FICHET, stated that the EAIE Conference serves as a crucial platform for Taiwanese universities to connect with European institutions, focusing on student exchanges, research collaboration, and establishing academic partnerships. The Taipei Mission's representative in Sweden, Dr. Klement Ruey-sheng GU, along with director of the education department, Robin Lu, and secretary Jack Huang, also attended the event to support efforts aimed at expanding Taiwan-European higher education networks.

Over the past five years, more than 27,000 European students have studied in Taiwan, with over 80% coming from EU member countries. Meanwhile, over 50,000 Taiwanese students have pursued their studies in Europe during the same period, reflecting a stable growth in bilateral educational exchange. Chairman Li further emphasized that Taiwan's relationship with the European Union is characterized by close collaboration in trade, culture, and education, with education being a central element of bilateral relations.

Since 2006, Taiwan's Ministry of Education has offered scholarships of up to $16,000 annually (approximately €13,700) for Taiwanese students on the waiting list for the Erasmus+ Mundus Joint Master's Degree Program who have not received EU funding, with 131 beneficiaries so far.
