Huawei Introduces Vision for AI-Centric All-Optical Networks to Revolutionize User Experience

During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 held in Barcelona, Huawei showcased its forward-thinking vision for an AI-centric all-optical target network at the Green All-Optical Network Forum, an event facilitated by IDATE. This initiative is designed to address the growing demands for enhanced network capabilities in bandwidth, reliability, coverage, and latency. To drive future service experiences, the tech giant introduced a comprehensive strategy divided into four components aimed at unlocking the potential of networks while delivering superior AI services.

Industry Collaboration and Insight

The forum drew attention from over 200 leaders in the field, including experts from major telecommunications regulatory bodies across Europe, representatives from the FTTH Council, and key operators and equipment manufacturers. Notable international firms like Bouygues Telecom and China Unicom presented valuable insights from their successful deployments, highlighting the significant role AI plays in developing smart home services, facilitating AI innovations through enhanced computational efficiency, and optimizing intelligent network operations.

Kim Jin, Vice President of Huawei’s Optical Business Product Line, emphasized the need for an AI-oriented approach in building all-optical networks. "Our objective is to empower operators to create Agentic UBB (Ultra-Broadband) networks that deliver unparalleled service experiences," he stated.

Innovative Solutions to Enhance Connectivity

1. Wi-Fi Enhancements

To improve home networking experiences, Huawei has developed a Wi-Fi 7 tri-band FTTR (Fiber to the Room) solution that promises a stable 4 Gbps speed in every room and seamless roaming within a ten-millisecond window. This enhancement is fortified with AI-driven anti-interference technology, which allows signals to penetrate through an extra wall, increasing rates by 20% even under interference.

2. Next-Gen Passive Optical Networks (PON)

Huawei aims to tackle issues of latency and bandwidth through innovative next-gen PON technologies including OLT app-level PON slicing and Wi-Fi air interface scheduling. These features facilitate the creation of dedicated channels for VIP applications, thereby ensuring a tiered and quality-driven network experience.

3. Metro Network Enhancements

To augment AI service efficiency, a new end-to-end Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) metro network solution is presented. By incorporating all-optical switching within metro frameworks, this development aims to minimize latency and fosters a mesh network architecture that supports millisecond-level computations essential for AI applications.

4. Bandwidth Innovations

Huawei’s efforts also extend to evolving toward 400G and 800G capabilities that intend to eliminate bandwidth bottlenecks. The addition of a 3D-mesh backbone configuration combined with cutting-edge cable transmission methods is set to address traffic surges in hotspots effectively, ensuring robust handling of data center interconnections and cross-border traffic.

5. Zero-Outage Networks

Innovative measures including coordinated hardware-software upgrades, alongside algorithms and advanced eOTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) technology, are designed to help operators pinpoint and mitigate network threats with accuracy. Notably, the use of liquid crystal materials enables wavelength-switched optical network (WSON) operations within a mere 50 ms, promising exceptional reliability and performance.

Additionally, Huawei's FANSpirit agent is deployed in the optical access domain to enhance broadband user experiences, while the OTNSpirit agent optimizes transmission paths based on essential factors like bandwidth and latency, advocating for intelligent upgrades in operations management.

Conclusion

Kim Jin concluded, "The age of AI offers a once-in-a-decade opportunity for operators. Huawei is dedicated to teaming up with industry partners to construct an all-optical target network that not only enhances user experiences but also unlocks greater network value, paving the way for mutual growth in this AI-driven era."
