Trimble Strengthens Partnership with Engineers Without Borders
In a significant development, Trimble has announced the expansion of its strategic partnership with the
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) network. This collaboration will bolster their shared goal of addressing pressing community needs through engineering solutions. The company has pledged not only financial resources but also advanced hardware, software, and expert training aimed at fostering sustainable results in global engineering projects.
Long-term Commitment to Engineering Initiatives
Trimble has been a steadfast supporter of EWB's endeavors in the U.S. Recent contributions have included technology donations to university chapters and financial grants for projects that enhance disaster relief and climate resilience via its
Trimble Foundation Fund. Now, this partnership is taking a global turn, expanding Trimble's commitment to international efforts, with the first stop being an ambitious project in
Eastern Uganda.
A Focus on Uganda’s Critical Infrastructure
The flagship initiative of this partnership will focus on unlocking critical local government funding to tackle significant infrastructure challenges in this region. Approximately 70% of Uganda’s population currently lacks access to crucial services such as potable water, quality sanitation, reliable energy, and educational facilities. Although local government funds exist to address these basic needs, districts struggle to access them due to gaps in data, engineering tools, and capacity.
Peter Nzabanita from EWB East Africa emphasized the necessity of collaboration with Trimble, stating that their expertise could help bridge these funding gaps by creating essential infrastructure plans and financial models. The collaboration aims to establish local community engagement that leads to a sustainable impact, which includes building training programs aimed at nurturing local professional talent and maintaining government accountability.
Phased Approach for Project Implementation
The
Uganda project will follow a phased approach, beginning with immediate groundwork to set a solid foundation for successful outcomes:
1.
Technical Baseline Surveys and Infrastructure Mapping: Utilizing Trimble solutions and GIS software alongside drone technology to gather vital information.
2.
Recruitment and Training of Local Youth: Aiming to engage 40 young community members for a population census, ensuring local involvement in data collection and analysis.
3.
Follow-Up Phases: Planned phases will include technical audits, community consultation for co-designing solutions, and comprehensive financial modeling aimed at attracting commercial investments, particularly through public-private partnerships.
Building Local Capacity
A crucial component of the project involves a hands-on
'Buildathon' event aimed at fostering collaborative efforts between Trimble’s teams and local partners. This event will not only provide practical support but also involve partnerships with educational organizations to empower women in the engineering sectors, ensuring a diverse leadership that shapes the initiative.
Sumele Adelana, Trimble's product marketing leader for architecture and design, expressed optimism about the opportunity for capacity building this project represents. By equipping communities with the tools to create and implement their own engineering solutions, the initiative strives to create lasting improvements that extend well into the future.
