Consumers Energy Launches Summer Appliance Recycling Events
Consumers Energy, a leading energy provider in Michigan, is taking significant steps to promote sustainability and assist its customers in reducing their energy expenses. This summer, the company will host a series of appliance recycling events aimed at encouraging electric customers to recycle less efficient appliances and reap financial benefits.
Financial Incentives for Recycling Appliances
Starting now and continuing through September, Consumers Energy is offering customers a chance to receive cash incentives for recycling their old appliances. Specifically, qualifying electric customers will earn
$50 for recycling a refrigerator or freezer, while those recycling additional appliances like air conditioning units, dehumidifiers, and compact refrigerators will receive
$15 each. This initiative is a part of their ongoing efforts to help households save on energy costs, as older appliances can consume up to three times more energy than newer models.
Schedule of Upcoming Events
Here are the upcoming appliance recycling events scheduled for participants:
- - Saturday, July 26: Grand Traverse Region Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Traverse City
- - Saturday, August 9: Edlers Appliance, Grandville
- - Saturday, August 23: Cadillac Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Cadillac
- - Saturday, September 20: Meridian Mall, Okemos

Why Recycling is Beneficial
According to sources, such as EnergyStar.gov, households could potentially save up to
$150 annually on energy bills by participating in the recycling program. It is estimated that since the inception of the appliance recycling initiative in 2009, over
330,000 large appliances have been successfully recycled by Consumers Energy, indicating the program's popularity and its positive environmental impact.
Lauren Snyder, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer and Growth Officer at Consumers Energy, emphasized the goal of this program, stating, _"This is just one of the many ways you can count on us to help you save money. By taking this simple step – out with the old and in with the new – you can take control of your bill and increase savings for you and your family in both the short and long term."_
Additional Energy Efficiency Programs
Apart from the appliance recycling effort, Consumers Energy continues to support its customers with various programs aimed at reducing energy waste and lowering bills. Other offerings include the Smart Thermostat Program, Home Energy Analysis, and Water Heater Rebates, which encourage customers to optimize their energy usage efficiently.
