Teamsters at UNFI Hold Practice Pickets for Fair Contracts
In a significant display of solidarity, hundreds of Teamsters employed by United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) rallied in Florida, Georgia, and Illinois to conduct practice picketing, advocating for fair initial contracts that acknowledge their contributions to the company. According to Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, these workers have been patient long enough and deserve contracts that honor their pivotal role. He warned that UNFI is playing games with the livelihood of its employees, stating, "If UNFI thinks it can keep stalling, it’s in for a rude awakening."
In the past year, over 1,000 UNFI drivers and warehouse workers voted overwhelmingly to join the Teamsters, and since 2022, more than 2,500 workers have organized under the union's umbrella. This surge in membership has brought the total number of Teamsters at UNFI to over 5,000, highlighting a growing discontent among workers regarding stalled negotiations and a perceived lack of commitment from management.
Brad Duncan, a member of Local 26 in Urbana, Illinois, and a warehouse worker at UNFI, voiced his frustrations, saying, "We are fed up. It’s time for management to get serious and bring a real offer to the table or we’ll do whatever it takes to win."
The issue is pressing, as UNFI serves as the primary distributor for Whole Foods across the U.S. Unresolved contracts could lead to significant disruptions in service, with more than 1,250 workers across the nation prepared to escalate their actions if negotiations continue to stall. This could seriously impact not just workers but also the supply chain that feeds countless consumers, reflecting on the larger economic implications of labor disputes.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is a robust union that supports 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The recent actions taken by the Teamsters at UNFI serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by workers in the industry. For continued updates on their fight, visit

The push for fair contracts by the UNFI Teamsters is not just an isolated event but part of a broader trend in which labor unions are fighting against stagnant compensation and labor conditions, signaling a crucial moment in the labor movement as workers demand respect, fair pay, and proper benefits. The outcome of these negotiations holds significant stakes not just for the workers involved but also the industry at large, highlighting the growing need for equitable labor practices in an evolving economy.
