Walbridge Initiates Major $16 Billion Data Center Project in Michigan

Walbridge's Largest Project Yet in Michigan

Walbridge, a notable construction firm based in Detroit, is embarking on what marks the pinnacle of its 110-year history: the construction of a massive $16 billion data center in Saline Township, Michigan. This project, designated exclusively for tech giants Oracle and OpenAI, is not only the largest venture undertaken by Walbridge but also represents the largest economic investment the state of Michigan has ever witnessed. As of now, over 200,000 trade hours have already been logged as construction activities are in full swing.

The data center project is expected to have a significant impact on the area, employing over 2,500 union tradespeople and apprentices and investing significantly in local communities. John Rakolta III, President of Walbridge, expresses the monumental nature of the undertaking, stating, "This is the project of our lifetime. Building the infrastructure that will power the next generation of American AI—right here in our home state—is exactly the work our company was built to do."

Founded in 1916, Walbridge has a rich history of constructively shaping Michigan's infrastructure. Over the years, the company has developed an extensive portfolio that includes manufacturing plants, automotive facilities, hospitals, and educational institutions. The Stargate Michigan campus, as it’s referred to, is an advanced construction endeavor recognized for its complexity and importance to the tech industry. It is notable that this venture will operate under a pioneering project labor agreement, ensuring that hundreds of Michigan workers contribute to its development.

The collaboration between Related Digital and Walbridge extends beyond conventional construction practices. Recognizing the importance of community and skilled labor, they have developed a labor agreement that underpins all 14 affiliated skilled trade unions, which is a first for data centers in the country. This also reflects the dedication of both parties to high safety and craftsmanship standards throughout the project, as shared by Bruce A. Beal, Jr., President of Related Companies: “Walbridge's understanding of what it takes to deliver a project of this scale made them the right partner from day one.”

The technical features of the planned campus are impressive. It will occupy 250 acres, and its infrastructure is designed to minimize water usage significantly, utilizing closed-loop cooling systems similar to those found in standard office buildings. While fully powered by DTE Energy, the project incorporates a battery storage investment, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of energy use.

Additionally, the project is slated to create around 450 permanent onsite jobs, fostering long-term employment opportunities within the area, which is expected to bring numerous economic benefits to Washtenaw County. An impressive $14 million has been earmarked for enhancing local fire services and further community investments.

Walbridge is also committed to developing a Safety and Quality Center on the Saline Township campus to nurture the skills of electrical apprentices, ensuring a robust pipeline of qualified tradespeople necessary for expanding AI infrastructure across the Midwest.

The Stargate Michigan project is truly a model of responsible development; not only does it enhance the technological capabilities of Michigan but also sets a nationwide example for sustainable construction practices and community commitment. Partnering with various trusted local businesses, including Motor City Electric and Progressive Mechanical Inc., this initiative promises to deliver a state-of-the-art facility while bolstering the local economy and creating a legacy of growth and innovation.

For Walbridge, the journey is just beginning. As they navigate the complexities of this significant undertaking, the impact of their efforts will resonate for generations to come, further embedding the company into the industrial narrative of Michigan. As they lead the charge in shaping America's AI infrastructure, all eyes will be on this ambitious project as a testament to modern construction achievement.
