Embracing Sustainability in Tourism
In a pioneering step towards sustainable tourism, the government of Baja California Sur has launched the EMBRACE IT initiative, which introduces a tax on foreign visitors to the state. This strategy aims to enhance local tourism infrastructure while promoting environmental conservation and community development.
The EMBRACE IT Tax Details
Effective from June 30, 2025, foreign visitors who stay in Baja California Sur for more than 24 hours will be subject to a tax of
$470 MXN (approximately
$25 USD) per person. Travelers can conveniently make the payment online via the
Travelkore platform, and they are required to present their proof of payment upon entry and exit at all major access points, including the airports in Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Loreto.
Purpose and Benefits
The tax collected through the EMBRACE IT initiative is designed to support three primary areas:
1.
Environmental Protection - Funds will contribute to local conservation efforts, ensuring that the region's unique ecosystems are preserved for future generations.
2.
Infrastructure Improvement - The initiative will help enhance tourism facilities, providing better services and amenities for visitors, which will in turn benefit the local economy.
3.
Social and Cultural Projects - Proceeds will also assist in funding community-driven projects that aim to uplift the standards of living for local residents and promote cultural exchange.
Mtra. Bertha Montaño Cota, the Minister of Finance and Administration, emphasized the government's dedication to offering memorable tourism experiences whilst ensuring the protection of the ecosystems and the well-being of local communities. "EMBRACE IT is a key tool to achieve this," she stated, highlighting the government's commitment to sustainability.

The implementation of the EMBRACE IT tax is carried out in partnership with
