The Launch of Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy: A New Path to Clean Energy
In a significant move to bolster the role of nuclear energy in addressing global energy challenges, The Rockefeller Foundation has collaborated with Temasek Trust to launch the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy (GCNP). Announced during the 2026 Philanthropy Asia Summit in Singapore, this initiative aims to harness philanthropic funds to expedite the deployment of safe, efficient, and equitable nuclear energy solutions. Notably, nuclear energy represents a mere 0.1%-0.2% of global climate philanthropy, prompting the coalition's formation to address this underinvestment.
The GCNP's mission revolves around expanding philanthropic support for nuclear energy. As energy demands surge, driven by population growth and increased consumption, the coalition seeks to integrate nuclear power into the clean energy landscape, thereby promoting energy security and human development. Notable members of the coalition include the Blue Horizons Foundation, CleanEcon, Founders Pledge, and the Rodel Foundation, with the Oppenheimer Project providing strategic backing.
Ashvin Dayal, Senior Vice President for Power at The Rockefeller Foundation, emphasized the necessity of nuclear energy in achieving universal energy abundance. He remarked, "The next generation of nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, is advancing rapidly, and their costs are decreasing. This presents a real opportunity for developing and emerging economies to incorporate safe and clean energy into their energy mix."
The coalition's efforts align with the COP28 Declaration, which has set ambitious goals for tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050 among over 30 nations, aiming to meet global net-zero targets. Furthermore, the GCNP will concentrate on four strategic pathways: building compelling narratives around nuclear energy, developing necessary skills and institutions, de-risking financing for nuclear initiatives, and enhancing governance frameworks for safety and security.
This initiative also serves as a vital platform for fostering collaboration among funders, sharing insights, and identifying high-impact opportunities tied to their philanthropic objectives. With the support of experts from diverse sectors, including government, academia, and civil society, the coalition will focus on integrating nuclear energy safely and effectively. The groundwork laid by the coalition is expected to facilitate a holistic approach to nuclear energy deployment, ensuring that it is recognized as a pivotal contributor to climate resilience and economic stability.
As a global leader in philanthropic investments, The Rockefeller Foundation has invested over $30 billion over its 113-year history, aiming to derive tangible benefits for communities worldwide. Temasek Trust, a steward of philanthropic assets, aims to apply innovative approaches to philanthropy that drive meaningful impact across various sectors, including environment, community upliftment, and capacity building.
With the launch of the GCNP, the philanthropic community is presented with a unique opportunity to reshape the future of energy. By prioritizing investments in nuclear energy, we can take substantial strides toward accomplishing global climate objectives, fostering both economic growth and sustainable development. The coalition promotes responsible dialogue and approaches to nuclear energy, addressing safety and responsible waste management to uphold the highest operational standards. Those interested in supporting this initiative are encouraged to join the coalition, contributing to a shared vision of a sustainable and energy-rich future.
