UnionPay International Launches Payment Network Program for International Students

UnionPay International (UPI), a global leader in payment solutions, recently announced the launch of an ambitious program specifically designed for international students. Collaborating with various universities, tuition payment platforms, student housing operators, and local banks, this initiative aims to facilitate cross-border payments, making tuition fees, everyday purchases, and local card applications simpler and safer for students from around the world. With an increasing number of students studying overseas, this program arrives at a crucial time when the volume of tuition fee payments has surged by 17% year-over-year in the first half of 2025, highlighting the growing financial needs of these students.

UPI’s integrated approach seeks to provide a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for international payment needs, ensuring that students can easily access services like tuition payments, campus expenses, and day-to-day shopping. By partnering with international payment systems such as Flywire, EasyTransfer, Convera (formerly Western Union), and PayMyTuition, UPI has established a network encompassing thousands of educational institutions worldwide. This collaboration allows participating universities to accept UnionPay cards with real-time foreign exchange rate discounts, thus enhancing the accessibility of their payment systems.

Furthermore, UPI has taken significant steps to engage with local banks in key student destinations, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Spain, and Canada. This strategy enables the issuance of UnionPay cards, facilitating a smooth application process for students arriving in these regions. Notably, providers of student accommodations in the UK such as Unite Students and Chapter Living also accept UnionPay payments, with several recognized local brands in Australia like Scape, Iglu, and UniLodge further contributing to the ecosystem. Moreover, global housing operators such as Greystar have integrated their systems with UnionPay to ensure a cohesive payment experience.

The UnionPay solution is accepted in 183 countries and regions, offering international students smooth and secure transactions as they navigate local markets. In special administrative regions like Hong Kong and Macau, nearly all ATMs and merchants accept UnionPay, further simplifying financial interactions. For example, UnionPay cards can be used with tap-and-go payment systems on the MTR, recharge Octopus cards using Apple Pay, and at popular local dining options in areas like Lan Kwai Fong. Additionally, significant educational institutions in Singapore, including NUS, JCU, and NAFA, have embraced UnionPay for online tuition payments, with approximately 80% of merchants in the country permitting card usage for dining and shopping.

Across Europe and the UK, UnionPay enjoys a broad acceptance spectrum, with most ATMs and commercial establishments, from cafes and restaurants to tourist attractions, supporting its services. Notable universities such as the University of Portsmouth, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Sussex, and Imperial College London have adopted UnionPay for tuition payments via their websites and through platforms like Flywire and Convera. In Canada, UnionPay supports over 500,000 merchants, including TT Supermarket, IKEA, Dollarama, Tim Hortons, and Starbucks, facilitating easy financial interactions for students. Similarly, Australian universities such as the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Monash University, and the University of Queensland accept UnionPay for both online and in-store transactions.

As the number of students pursuing education abroad continues to rise, UnionPay is leveraging its international payment network to ensure that cross-border transactions become more secure, simple, and cost-effective. This initiative not only offers a reliable service for students but also cultivates a steady customer base for international banks and merchants, fostering the growth of local consumer markets. UPI remains open to new partnerships in its ongoing mission to create a safer and more convenient payment ecosystem for international students.
