In Hagerstown, Maryland, Rider Jet Center has had a remarkable summer, marked by significant advancements in infrastructure, operational success, and strong partnerships in the aviation sector. As a full-service Fixed Base Operator (FBO), the company has made strides that emphasize its role in enhancing the aviation experience at Hagerstown Regional Airport.

Investing in Infrastructure

To accommodate soaring demand for air travel and fuel, Rider Jet Center is implementing strategic improvements to its facilities. A significant project underway involves renovating a previously dormant fuel tank, increasing the fuel farm's capacity to manage the rising number of aircraft that require service. The refurbishment of this 15,000-gallon fuel tank, which has not been operational since 2003, is a collaborative effort with local authorities and is funded through the George Edwards Fund. This initiative reflects a 40% spike in Jet A fuel sales from 2024 to 2025 and showcases Rider Jet Center's commitment to maintaining high standards for aircraft fueling and storage.

Supporting Key Missions

This summer also saw the arrival of numerous military and government aircraft at the rider facility. Notably, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) brought its Twin Otter research aircraft to study air quality as part of an important project. This flying laboratory played a vital role in supporting both atmospheric research and planning for significant national events like the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In addition to supporting scientific research, the Rider Jet Center facilitated military operations, welcoming numerous aircraft from branches like the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, which included the F/A-18 Super Hornet. As the only Maryland civilian FBO authorized to provide military and government contract fuel, Rider Jet Center is a key resource for these aviation sectors.

Community Engagement and Business Milestones

Rider Jet Center continues to solidify its position in the community, achieving milestones that reinforce its commitment to both business and local outreach. Recently, South Mountain Aviation, under the umbrella of Rider Jet Center, attained its FAA Part 145 Repair Station Certification, which enables the company to conduct specialized maintenance and repairs on various small jets, making it a noteworthy contributor to the aviation industry in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The airport is also becoming a focal point for community engagement, as highlighted by the sold-out Maker's Mark Bourbon Dinner hosted on June 24, which featured a unique four-course dinner experience and attracted guests from the wider region.

Looking Ahead

With summer drawing to a close, Rider Jet Center is gearing up for an exciting fall. The center is preparing for its 15th annual Hangarfest on September 27, which aims to raise awareness for breast cancer and bring together aviation enthusiasts and the local community. Additionally, the 20th Annual Aviation Education Career Expo on November 6 promises to connect aspiring aviation professionals with scholarship opportunities, focusing on enriching the future of the industry.
