Transforming Theatre into a Playground
This summer, the Koenji Theatre (Za-Koenji) is set to become a lively space for children aged 0 to 15. The theatre will host the 2026 Koenji Playground program, themed 'Paper Rehearsal,' from July 30 to August 2. Organised by the licensed management company Syuz'gen, this free event encourages youngsters to interact with art in a playful environment.
The first iteration of this initiative, focusing on the theme of paper, involves artist Satsuki Imai as the playground planner. Known for her participatory and co-creative art projects, Imai will be designing a space filled with various types of paper. Children are invited to come at their leisure and engage creatively, similar to playing in a park or schoolyard. They can fold, tear, crumple, and toss paper—transforming the theatre environment day by day.
In addition to the Koenji Playground, the theatre regularly runs other kids programs, such as the weekly Saturday storytelling and free craft session 'Ehonn no Wakka.' This program encourages creative expression through both reading and crafting, while a new Play Circle program starting August 22 will focus on themed workshops and free play.
About 'Paper Rehearsal'
At the core of the 'Paper Rehearsal' lies the simple yet versatile medium of paper. With soft, hard, and thin varieties provided, the only limit is the children's imagination. The theatre aims to explore the potential of paper within the space, allowing for a unique experience where traditional structures are erased. Children will experiment without preset methods or rules—like a rehearsal for a play, they can explore, fail, and succeed, discovering unexpected ways to engage with both the paper and their surroundings.
Every play session is a chance to witness the dynamic relationship between the creative process and the physical theatre space, as it evolves with the engagement of children.
Satsuki Imai: Playground Planner
Hailing from Kanagawa, Satsuki Imai completed her PhD in Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022. Her work revolves around participatory and co-creative practices, emphasizing social interaction and shared experiences in 'playgrounds.' With diverse backgrounds in video game production, design, and contemporary art, Imai explores relationships that spark communication and creativity. Her notable projects include 'Ningen No Rimaki' and 'Hajimari No Daichi.' Recent exhibitions featured her work in various international showcases, with ongoing themes of connection and transformative play.
An Evolution of Koenji Playground
The Koenji Theatre has previously hosted an interactive workshop, transforming the space into a fictional 'town' every Golden Week under the title 'Everyone's Little Koenji.' As of April 2026, under the management of Syuz'gen, the new Koenji Playground emerged, inviting artists each year to redesign the idea of a 'playground' through varied themes. This initiative encompasses 'Creating, Playing, and Encountering,' allowing artists to shape potential playscapes while ensuring children engage and modify these environments through their explorations.
In a statement from Tomohiro Okawa, the theatre’s director, he shares excitement for the heritage left by the previous children's program while introducing this inventive twist that incorporates play as a core facet of theatre. This fusion of art, play, and participation aims to result in a uniquely enriching experience.
