WOTA's Response to the Kumamoto Earthquake

In the wake of the Kumamoto earthquake that struck in August 2026, WOTA Corporation has taken significant steps to support those affected by this disaster. Recognizing the urgent demand from affected communities, WOTA officially started the installation and operation of shower facilities in Ushiku city on July 30, under the request of Kumamoto Prefecture.

By August 5, WOTA had successfully covered the formal requests for shower facilities from local authorities, which had been confirmed at that point. These efforts included adapting their services based on the evolving needs related to the consolidation of evacuation shelters and increased demand for water supply.

Collaborative Approach for Effective Support

WOTA's rapid response was bolstered by a network of support from various stakeholders, including municipal governments and the central government. This collaborative effort involved equipment support from national municipalities through JWAD, immediate logistics on-site with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and water supply operations initiated by the Japan Waterworks Association.

Moreover, contributions from the Self-Defense Forces accelerated the transport of additional resources and equipment, allowing WOTA to improve its service delivery in the affected areas promptly. By August 5, WOTA expanded its team to over 70 personnel focusing on not just installation and operation but also logistics, maintenance, and administrative coordination for the crisis response.

Continued Commitment to Aid

As the temporary shelters continued to adapt to changing conditions, including facility closures, plumbing emergencies, and varying numbers of users, WOTA has committed to maintaining their operations with flexibility. They have been prepared to adjust their resources to meet any new water needs that may emerge, including support for those in temporary housing or those remaining at home due to safety concerns.

In addition to providing shelters with water supply, WOTA announced an expansion of their support to medical and welfare facilities, which face unique challenges regarding operational costs not covered under current public assistance schemes. To ensure that these facilities have the necessary hygiene resources, WOTA has launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at increasing their capacity for providing bathing and sanitation assistance.
