Celebrating a Milestone: The 125th Anniversary of Japanese Women's University

On April 20, 2026, the Japanese Women's University (JWU) located in Bunkyo, Tokyo, will proudly celebrate its 125th founding anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its illustrious history. In anticipation of this landmark occasion, the university hosted its 45th Homecoming Day on April 18, in collaboration with the alumni association, Sakura Fujikai. This year's event featured a special occasion titled the "Book Café 125", commemorating the renaming of two departments within the Faculty of Literature effective from the 2026 academic year.

The Book Café 125 provided a unique opportunity for attendees to explore a collection of 125 old and new literary works contributed by past faculty members. Guests were encouraged to select a book that intrigued them while reconnecting with former classmates and friends, rekindling cherished memories within the university's vibrant community.

A Creative Space for Connection

The event was thoughtfully designed by students from the newly established Department of Architectural Design, set to open in the 2024 academic year. The aesthetic of the venue was divided into two distinct areas — the "Café Area" at the entrance of the Centennial Tower and the "Picnic Area" at the Fountain Promenade. This layout enabled visitors to tailor their experience according to personal preferences, fostering a relaxed environment conducive to dialogue and reminiscence.

In addition to literary discussions, visitors had the pleasure of tasting madeleine cake, crafted based on a traditional recipe passed down since the mid-Showa era. This culinary delight was adapted with input from faculty in the Department of Food Science, slated to open in 2025, and prepared by two alumni pastry chefs from local bakeries, "Petit Kouan" in Kofu City and "Patisserie Emariyuru" in Soka City. The madeleines were enjoyed alongside a recommended coffee selection by President Satoko Shinohara.

Feedback from attendees reflected the event's success, with many expressing gratitude for the chance to converse leisurely at a space they frequented during their student years. The rich flavors of camaraderie were evident as diverse departments came together to create a vibrant experience centered around literature.

New Department Names and Educational Philosophy

The Faculty of Literature is also undergoing pivotal changes, with its majors receiving new titles as of April 2026. The Japanese Literature Department will now be known as the Japanese Language and Literature Department, while the History Department will transition to the Department of Historical Culture. This evolution represents a significant shift toward broader educational goals.

The Japanese Language and Literature Department aims to enhance students' skills in language and discourse, equipping them with the analytical abilities necessary for the digital age as well as fostering global awareness. Meanwhile, the Department of Historical Culture seeks to cultivate historical thinking skills through the exploration of primary sources and documents, encouraging students to consider practical applications of their studies in today’s international society. Both departments will encourage a deepened understanding of cultural representations, embracing multifaceted perspectives that transcend time.
