ABB Showcases Innovative Charging Solutions for Next-Gen EVs
ABB recently participated in the Decarbonization Management EXPO, held from September 17 to 19 at Makuhari Messe, showcasing their commitment to developing versatile charging solutions for the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs). This event reflects ABB’s dedication to sustainability and innovation in e-mobility.
During the expo, ABB made its debut presentation of the Terra 184 JN, a rapid charger that supports both CHAdeMO and NACS (North American Charging Standard) specifications. Set for order commencement within the year, this charger is designed to cater to all EVs currently operating on Japanese public roads, providing a singular solution for varied charging needs.
Furthermore, ABB presented the Terra AC Wallbox 9.6 kW, an advanced model under development, featuring a higher power output compared to the existing 6 kW model, which has seen over 1,500 units sold since its launch in 2022. This new charging solution is aimed at addressing the growing demand for efficient charging options as EV battery technology evolves and increases in capacity.
“Presently, there are two rapid charging standards—CHAdeMO and NACS—available for EVs on Japanese roads,” remarked Yukio Kataoka, Head of ABB's E-Mobility Division. “The Terra 184 JN charger can accommodate both standards, offering flexibility to EV owners, manufacturers, dealers, and charging infrastructure operators. Additionally, existing CHAdeMO-compatible models like the Terra 184 JJ can be retrofitted to support NACS specifications, allowing rapid adaptability to the evolving market demands for NACS-compatible vehicles. We are also progressing in the development of 9.6 kW type chargers to support the next generation of EVs equipped with high-performance batteries, which enhances convenience for charging at bases, routes, and destinations.”
